PayPal is such a shitty company, I wish they'd be shut down or regulated by now, seems like nothing will stop them though.

Suppose I wish the same for internet monsters, the second you lash out at some person just making some goddamn innocuous videos your internet privileges should be revoked. No posting online, no online banking, no streaming, no email, no nothing until you can prove in a court of law you're ready to mingle like respectable adults.

Once again, this demonstrates why PayPal needs to be considered and regulated as a financial institution. Freezing someone's account at the company's whim is abusive.

Freezing someone's account at the company's whim is abusive.

Regular banks can and will do the same thing is they think you're doing something illegal.

Also, there's generally no explanation given as they're trying to avoid telling scammers how to work the system.

That said, this is bullshit and there really needs to be a higher bar with reporting requirements for having an account suspended.

Might this not be time to quietly have a word with some white-hat hacker somewhere, enlisting them to fight the hydra by taking down 8Chan's entire server or something?

ASMR artists

ASMRtists, surely?
posted by The Tensor at 12:37 PM on September 18, 2018 [21 favorites]

I haven’t read the article yet, but I figured it was only a matter of time for ASMR harassment to really start popping off.

As shit’s gotten worse over the past few years I’ve noted a marked increase in ASMR videos that are intended to provide not just relaxation but comfort and affirmation. Telling the viewer that they’re valuable and they’re worthy of love and all that jazz. By and large this is fine for me personally, I’m in it for the tingles and I don’t really care how you trigger them as long as you do.

But the phrase “everything’s going to be alright” shows up a lot, and goddamn but that makes me nervous. Whenever an ASMRtist says that or anything similar, I can’t help but think that for someone watching, that’s not gonna be true, and I can’t help but worry that the wrong dude without enough connection to reality is going to watch one of those, and things won’t turn out alright for that dude, and that dude is going to track the ASMRtist down and fucking murder them for “lying.”

Just something I have anxiety about.

I got the vibe from the article that these are being shut down for being considered pornographic.

Basically if Paypal thinks someone is going to nut to your video, they'll shut you down.

Aren't there better alternatives to Paypal that ASMRers and everyone else could use?

The 8chan angle reminds me of Twitch introducing a dress code for streamers.

Like, they're all bothered that attractive women are getting some of their viewers because they are attractive women. Undoubtedly many of the channers enjoy looking at attractive women too, but the women in question can never benefit from that.

No, because PayPal and nearly all major pay processors have blackballed sex workers (or anyone they privately deem "adult" or "risky!") for years. That this harassment now extends to other creators is no surprise to anyone in the industry. For example, let's say you're an independent content creator like a camgirl or ASMR whisperer. You choose your own hours, make your own videos, book your own clients. The money is good and you have a lot of personal freedom. What happens when you can't get paid on major platforms anymore? Well, you have to turn to unreliable payment strategies... either you talk your existing clients into using shady private processors that take 25-30% of your earnings and sometimes fold in the night or don't pay you, or you use digital pimps (hello Chaturbate!) that feed you better traffic but take ridiculous cuts off your earnings... 40-70%... and will harass you or shut down your accounts if you try to push back against unscrupulous business practices.

A compromised money stream means riskier clients, economic instability and fewer safety guards. This is misogyny and sexphobia, pure and gleaming.

In what bizarro world did we end up in where 4chan, 8chan and related - the same sites that brought us stuff like shitting dick nipples, lolicon, futa and dragons fucking cars - became the morality police of the internet?

And what insane morons are listening to them?

You know, this brings up a pretty huge, glaring blind spot in a lot of futurism and predictions, that the world might end up being totally awful not because of an evil dictator, a nuclear war or some natural disaster or calamity, but instead it might suck just because a bunch of internet nerds like getting off on having some kind of control over the world via trolling and pushing sociopolitical buttons.

And they'd probably love to have been that big or infamous as a collective. "Yeah, we found existence lacking because no hot babes would touch our penises, so we ended it."

The cyberpunk genre briefly touches on it, but even the so-called cyber terrorists like the Panther Moderns were kind of chaotically neutral, if not actually chaotic good. And in Idiocracy it's just the slow death of a lazy humanity that doesn't want to have to stop eating or watching TV to take a dump.

This is some increasingly dark and fucked up shit.

"Grandma, how did The War start?"

"Well, it started with trolling and... the internet."

I'm so glad the 8chan new fangled "witch burners" are here to save us all from falling asleep peacefully. I mean - seriously - it's just another method to hurt women creators, as notably, they haven't gone after any men.

It makes me feel like I'm going crazy when I hear tech CEO's prattle on about free speech and open platforms, generally in response to their monetization of figurative and literal nazis. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here thinking, what about nipples?

When the only way you can think about women is as sex objects, everything we do becomes pornographic.

When corporations start behaving conservatively like this, you can bet they are doing it in all aspects of their decision-making. They are setting themselves up to be tomorrow’s giants of yesteryear.

These ASMR artists have found a new arena of demand, a way to get a slice of the lucrative pie of discretionary spending, and the establishment is fighting back. While the road may be bumpy, it can’t be repressed indefinitely.

The world is lacking content platforms that are truly supportive of artists (of all stripes)—best case scenario, a new generation of platforms and ecosystems will bubble up to replace the current set. These new platforms will consider issues like bias in machine learning from the start, and will blow the old dinosaurs out of the water as the world continues its march towards treating all people with respect and fairness.

You can't pay for rent or food or electricity with bitcoin, you have to convert it to real money first which is a hassle. It's also a way bigger barrier to people wanting to send the money, the majority of whom won't already have bitcoin set up.
posted by EndsOfInvention at 7:40 AM on September 19, 2018 [4 favorites]

On top of that, there's also the constantly fluctuating value (How much do you think 1 BTC is worth? $13,000? Nope, it's $6,300 now. Last week it was $7,000.) and, well, the unwieldiness of making transactions in a currency that is valued in the thousands of dollars. Oh, and don't forget that you're likely to have your wallet contents stolen by whatever exchange you use, which might look similar to what PayPal is doing but at least the value of a dollar in your PayPal account is relatively stable while you still have access to it.

Maybe a handful of them actually care, but I guarantee the vast majority are furiously rubbing one out to these videos. The hypocrisy is a feature, they're not saying "stop hitting yourself" because they're worried about your welfare.
