Released from the vaults: How Do You Sleep? (footage of Takes 5 & 6, Raw Studio Mix Out-take) - John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band with their "diss track" (Beatles Bible entry) in response to Paul McCartney's apparent jabs at John in his tracks Too Many People (YT; BBe) and Back Seat of My Car (YT; BBe). The video was released as a teaser for the forthcoming Imagine: The Ultimate Collection (BBe), which the official johnlennon YouTube account has been promoting with a series of videos and clips, including some annotated videos (turn on the captions), for Crippled Inside (evolution mix), Jealous Guy (raw studio mix, film excerpt), and Jealous Guy (Elements Mix) featuring Nicky Hopkins.

If you want to just listen to the album, here's official versions of the 2010 remastered tracks, but not in the proper order (Discogs).

"Haha, this disrespectful audiotrack will put Paulie in his place and everyone will know who really is the genius!"
"I dunno John, maybe there's a word that rhymes with 'Yesterday' other than 'day'."
"Oi, Georgie, maybe I'll write one about you next, and I'll get Paul to play on it!"
"Ugh, fine. 'You've dunnit again, John. Bravo.'"
"'At's more like it!"

As diss tracks go, it's better than most, I think. But it's hard to judge it on musical terms alone since the lyrics are what everyone will focus on. The video is pretty cool though, I love Klaus being stoic throughout and then finally breaking into a smile at the end of the track.

Thoughts: I always feel bad for Paul when yet another version of Imagine is re-re-re-released and “How Do You Sleep?” is given the studio outtake / remix treatment and discussed ad nauseam. (Although I’m sure Paul can deal.)

George was a pretty good slide player earlier than I thought he was.

Klaus is not a great bass player, but he is perfect for this group (and the stuff he did with Nilsson).

All of the ways the instruments are dampened (the paper underneath the bridge of John’s guitar, the foam underneath the bridge of Klaus’ bass, George barely using a pick)…I adore that super dry 70s studio sound

I won’t buy this, but I sure as shit will check it out from my library.

I have to admit, I was unfamiliar with this beef between John and Paul, so I was hooked by NPR's description of the conflict. Also, this was the one full version of studio takes that the John Lennon's estates (or whoever runs that YouTube account) put out, so it seems like they're OK by running with this old tiff, too.

Paul is definitely doing OK. From his extended car pool karaoke and tour of old haunts with James Cordon (direct link to YouTube clip), to almost half an hour of Paul breaking down his most iconic songs for GQ, and telling stories in response to the web's most asked questions for 15 minutes for Wired (where most of those videos last 4-7 minutes because most people see it as part of the interview circuit requirement to do and move on), he seems pretty happy to chat about his past and present work at length. It seems he's happy to be a verbose musical elder, who is still making new music.

beef between John and Paul

McCartney speaks fairly freely about his feelings in this interview.

OF course this advice is moot now, but I'd consult with Todd Rundgren before getting into any kind of verbal dispute with Lennon.

As for Voorman, no one's saying he's Tony Levin, but he recorded performances much stronger than that studio rehearsal. While there are a few clams in there, I always liked his style.

Not John's greatest song but still fun to get to see them playing. So weird that after the Beatles were dead and gone, they were still so young. Lennon is only 30 here and George is 28.

Re-reading my comment. I mean that in 1971, the Beatles as a group were over, not that any one of them were dead.

Well, except Paul of course.
