Increasingly, teens have begun to view oral sex as a way to avoid HIV, despite public health experts' warnings to the contrary. Turns out, the kids may be right.

I can't belive anyone would be stupid enough to let an HIV infected man cum in their mouths.

I mean before this study of course.

To be honest, I get kind of annoyed about the 'saftey mania' thats promoted to kids these days. As far as using a dental dam for box munching (that dosn't sound fun at all) and using a condom for masterbation (pay for each wank!?).

Well, I thought you were joking about choking the bishop with his hat on, but then a little google proved me wrong.

And I also found this. Which made me giggle.

geoff: There was actual an artical I think on mefi a while back about a lectureer who suggested it. It seems like a huge waste of money to me...

Ok, so the AIDS risk is low according to that study. You can still get Herpes, gonorrhea, and various other STDs through unprotected oral sex. There is still no excuse not to be safe in a non-monogamous relationship.

Teens, oral sex... man, my generation sucked... because it didn't.

What I wouldn't give to be 15 these days!

(that dosn't sound fun at all)

It does sound kind of strange, but in practice it's pretty damn cool.

What good it fellatio without the flavor? And flavored condoms don't count. I want my man to taste like man, not strawberry.
posted by evanizer at 9:43 PM on June 7, 2002

They should have mancrotch-flavored condoms for that strawberry I once blew.

God, sorry about that, it's late.

This study looks pretty good. The CDC oral sex study showed an 8% estimated infection rate, but it was A) not couples and B) gay men in San Francisco, where crystal meth, mega multiple partners, poppers, viagra, etc, are near-commonplace, so I totally believe the results.

Amen, Evanizer!
(and i'm saying that because i'm in a monogamous relationship and hate flavored condoms.)

> a dental dam for box munching

This sounds like Bowdlerized cursing a la tinker's dam. "Frankly, John, I couldn't give a dental dam for box munching. It's Marjorie I'm worried about."

Gummi, I believe you have the coolest Mefi profile I have seen to date. Hoecake.

I'm shocked! shocked! that stavrosthewonderchicken has yet to post to this thread!

And remember kids:

yoda My g/f hates performing oral sex, because of the taste of the pre-ejac is there. Anyway I can limit it or alter its taste?
dan_savage drink plenty of fluids
dan_savage eat plenty of fruit
dan_savage avoid coffee
dan_savage alcohol
dan_savage cigarettes
dan_savage asparagus
dan_savage and crystal meth
dan_savage if you do all this
dan_savage and avoid all that
dan_savage your bodily fluids will be as yummy as they possibly can be

I don't know about the asparagus or crystal meth but--just judging from previous commentary here on personal vices--the rest of that list would seem to kinda queer it (flava wise only!) for a large percentage of the MeFi crowd, does it not?

Funny/sad/stupid; from that first article, about oral sex being on the rise among teens:

"Click here to read "Talking with Kids About Tough Issues," a pamphlet designed by Children Now and the Kaiser Family Foundation."

Oral sex isn't mentioned once in that pamphlet; but risks associated with intercourse repeatedly are. Ah, and the delicious irony of the pamphlet's closing:

"You might also use this question as an opportunity to point out that not having sexual intercourse is a good idea for teens. Help them understand there are other ways to show affection."

Yes indeed.

What is oral sex? I thought there was but one kind of sex.

if i remember correctly, the worst form of intercourse concerning HIV is via anal sex. (there's a slightly higher transmission rate, i'm thinking.) and, anyway: ouch.

Clevershark: I do hope you're kidding. One of my friends had her reputation completely ruined by two isolated incidents, one in 8th grade and the other in 9th grade. Making matters worse, the school intervened on the 9th grade one, and drove her to the verge of suicide. It really isn't nearly as cool or funny as you make it out to be.

(Unless I'm reading it wrong, and you were really being sarcastic, in which case I offer my sincerest apologies)

Ptrin, are you saying that your friend gave oral sex and got a reputation as a slut or something? If so, sounds like the problem has more to do with the attitude of the administration and the other kids...depending of course on what else the incidents involved.

What I wouldn't have given for two isolated incidents in junior high!

gummi: if you're in a monogamous relationship, why don't you both get tested? If you're clean you can do whatever you want without a condom.
posted by delmoi at 3:19 PM on June 8, 2002

Delmoi, we have both been tested and we're both fine. I don't use condoms when engaging in oral sex with my partner, but I will never be comfortable enough to not use them otherwise. It's just this fear in me that will never go away. Also, my partner claims that, for him, the use of condoms while engaging in anal sex allows his performance to last a little longer. And that is just fine by me. :D

you know, it's so much easier to change everyone else's perceptions instead of your own behavior!

moz, is it about what's easier, or what's right? By your logic, maybe interracial couples should just call it off, too much stigma.
posted by bingo at 6:34 PM on June 8, 2002

delmoi: not true. One of them can cheat. And even if you both get tested constantly, HIV takes something like 13 weeks to show up. Basically you're never safe.

Although I suppose "monogamous" covers that. It's just there's really no way to tell.

asparagus

I find this one hard to believe. A little too much of a coincidence that such a phallic-looking vegetable should just happen to have a big influence. Sounds more like sympathetic magic to me.
