Punk Rock Aerobics. "Punk Rock Aerobics: The work out that rocks out. No more sucky classes full of braindead bimbos in spandex thongs. PRA is for fun people with discerning taste. An hour and a half of cardio and strengthening class that will have you pogoing and skanking your butt off!" Brought to you by Maura and Hilken (the latter of the band fuzzy). As they say on the mission page: "Free your mind and your ass will follow."

So instead of paying them money, you could just go to a club and dance instead. Or, just turn on your stereo.

if you go to a club, you'll be paying cover charge, the price of whatever drinks you may buy, and deal with wiggy guys strung out on x. plus, no strength program!

Isn't there something vaguely... authoritarian about a few people getting up on a stage and telling a crowd exactly how to move their bodies in time to the music? Obviously, not such a big problem in the aerobics of the straights, but how does this jibe with the punk ethic? Is there anything left of the punk ethic? Was there ever?
Can anyone in the NYC area check this out and give us all a first-hand account of how these classes work? Inquiring Mefites want to know...

Ten, twelve years ago, my pals and I used to refer to ourselves as 'aging punks'.
Oh dear.

Ha...yeah. Some of my friends go to the Middle East one on occasion. Twas quite the thing to do a year ago or so ago. Seemed like everyone who went then knew each other -- big turnouts, usually the same faces as at the local clubs and concerts. Not esp. "punk" but fun.

The YMCA near where I live does gospel aerobics. No spandex thongs there either I guess...
