Chips Ahoy

Bloomberg Businessweek has made waves today by publishing claims that Chinese spies have compromised hardware used by many US tech companies. More specifically, Bloomberg claims that extra chips have been added to motherboards manufactured by SuperMicro which supplies commodity server hardware to the likes of Apple and Amazon. Amazon, Apple, and Supermicro have denied the claims.

Some have noted that the claims are suspect given the weight of the accusations and the fact that Bloomberg exclusively relies on anonymous sources.

The hack detailed in the article relies on the Intelligent Platform Management Interface, an "out of band" way for administrators to manage hardware. Some doubt that the attacks align with this model and others are discussing the impact of the allegations if true.

Other assorted thoughts on supply chain security, a longer statement from Amazon, and an earlier (2013) discussion of security issues with out-of0-band management engines.
