Argh. Give me the reach around. Give a description. For those of you going into the thread for a quick description:

Woman recalls a meeting she had with the 9/11 hijackers.

Use the front page for a description and leave all the melodrama for inside the post.

Catch, that link really sucked.

I agree that a description would have been nice. I almost skipped reading the link because I thought BentPenguin meant chilling as in hanging out and chillin'.

So how about we waste the entire thread bitching about how it could be better? That seems to be par for the course around here.

Did you read the article crash? She fucking wished Mohammed Atta luck on his 'endeavor' and shook his hand. Whether it made sense for her to do it at the time is irrelevant, imagine how she must feel now.

That would be haunting. And that woman was damn slow on the uptake.

Sure, one word posts are annoying but we need to get down to the serious business of not believing this woman. Will someone please start raising serious doubts about this woman's story? Please?

Thank you.

"At first, he refused to speak with me," said Bryant, remembering that Atta called her "but a female."
I don't know about recognising "evil", but Jerks stick out a mile. I am amazed that she spent an hour with this guy and parted politely. She must be so nice. Why aren't the people I try to borrow money from so nice?

God, if she had been any of the women I know and he had said that, they would have reacted quite... violently, and, minus its leader, 9/11 might have been avoided.

Well, she didn't give him any money.

Also, sometimes when people are immediatly disliked by someone, it strengthens there desire for that person to like them. It also sounds like she made headway with him, maybe she thought she was turning a male chavinist around.

Chilling.

As others have mentioned, it does make me feel a smidge better that we're dealing with sloppy fanatics rather than Saladin with a Kalashnikov.

Yeah, palegirl...something about the story seems really off to me too.

I just can't believe that Atta would be that flippant & bold about it. Would he really have made so many unveiled comments about his planned attacks? My gut says no....
posted by jennak at 9:57 PM on June 10, 2002

Very, very, very strange story to the point of implausability. Why would Atta make so many references to his plans, speak about Bin Laden, etc. in a government facility with a US government employee? Atta was presumably fairly intelligent and Western-educated, would he really feel safe discussing his plans like that?

Of course, in the end he was right... which is chilling. But this story rings so false and strange to me.

Well, the business about trying to buy the picture off the woman's wall kind of made my master caution light come on. After all, he could just hunt around and get a picture that good or better off the Internet, couldn't he?

Whether the story is true, exaggerated or simply fabricated .. the whole slant of the story is laughable.

It reads like a guide to spotting terrorists, with HIS EVIL BLACK EYES .. and crazy foreign talk .. good luck to any none flag waving american trying to get a loan in the future.

When the gentleman came into the bank asking for a home loan ... his EVIL BLACK EYES told me ONE THING .. he wanted to buy a BOMB HOUSE.
posted by mrben at 10:22 PM on June 10, 2002

Yeah, I jumped in here to post that I think this is fake... contrived somehow.... I mean it's just overkill.... Why would he describe in such great detail the plans for the plane? Why would she not realize he was "evil" until after she saw his photo on the news when he threatened to cut her throat and blow up Washington? Either she's a completely dense fool, or it's made up... By ABC, her, or the Feds trying to scare up some more support
posted by Espoo2 at 10:22 PM on June 10, 2002

I think she's just making it up, pulling it out of her ass. 10% of what she reported happened, and for the rest... who is going to contradict her?? Not Atta.

> ...and he told me, 'No, A-T-T-A, as in Atta boy!' "

Ha! I love that line.
posted by pracowity at 10:33 PM on June 10, 2002

Atta boy! now that would have been a much better link. I would agree I think she's pulling it out her ass. 15 minutes and all that.
posted by onegoodmove at 10:48 PM on June 10, 2002

I agree it all sounds really far-fetched and silly, but Attaboy would have had to provide substantial detail about his plans for converting the plane in order to justify borrowing over $600,000 (and from the Ag. Dept. of all places). And Atta's attitude (attatude?) toward women has been established, making it very believable that he thought he could shock/threaten this inferior being into handing over the dough.

His approach, as she describes it, isn't necessarily lacking in intelligence. Ignorant? Definitely. And unsophisticated, to say the least. But it's a bit much to call her a liar simply because "Mr. T" so obviously stank up his attempt to get a loan via the verbal abuse route.

well, maybe the part where he wanted to fill an ENTIRE plane except for the pilot with chemicals would be something to tip her off.

i'm not sure on the validity of the story. if it isn't true, this woman is a fool for making herself look so dense.
posted by christian at 11:18 PM on June 10, 2002

It's not too unbelievable, if the only job she could get was with the brilliant folks at the INS. You know, the same agency that mailed Atta a green card in 2002...
posted by insomnyuk at 11:24 PM on June 10, 2002

You know, the same agency that mailed Atta a green card in 2002...

Student Visa...which is a HUGE difference if you know anything about immigration into the States. Not to be snide; you are, of course, right that it was mailed 6 months after the attacks.

Dontcha think someone with a normal level of curiosity would have left their office and Googled the name he mentioned.."Osama Bin Laden?" Considering the threathening comments he made over the course of an hour, she looks quite foolish for not doing a bit of post-interview research.
posted by davebush at 3:53 AM on June 11, 2002

She took 8-9 months to come forward with this crazy ass story? ABC apparently thinks it's hogwash enough to not even run it during sweeps, fer chrissakes. I guess she had no where else to go since Sally Jessy Raphael is off the air.

My bullshit detector went off about 15 seconds into reading this article. Here's my favorite part:

Bryant, who explained that there was no money in the safe because loans are never given in cash, and also that she was trained in karate.

The ultimate ridiculous lie to cap off a whole conversation of made-up events?

Don't mess with me man! I know karate. Really. I do.

He forgot to wear his "HI! I'M A TERRORIST!" smiley button.
posted by Skot at 7:41 AM on June 11, 2002

Yeah, this set my BS detector off first "telling her story to ABCNEWS in defiance of direct orders from the USDA's Washington headquarters."

Um...see, defying a federal order...that's a special kind of stupid...doing it when you don't even have a real story...that's just limelight begging.

Secondly, if anyone, anywhere threatened someone with "cutting my throat and making off with the millions of dollars in that safe" they'd be in custody in seconds. Making that sort of threat is illegal and if, indeed Atta did make that threat and she didn't report it...she's dumber than she sounds in this article. And the karate thing...oh please. I bet she pronounces it "Kay-Ra-Tea".

I call Bullshit on her. I do.
