name our yacht
On a sunny afternoon in June of 2002 Peter James Zielinski and Brett Presson, on an eternal quest to live the lives of rock stars, acquired a contest about acquiring a brand new yacht. As such, they were left with the daunting task of giving a name to said yacht. After much debate, they ultimately came up with the perfect name for said yacht but consequently, they forgot the name of said yacht shortly after said yacht was acquired in a contest about acquiring said yacht. Thus, they'll need your help.

I likes your style rusty... how about S.S. Not A Steamship for a nice pseudo-magritte wanna-gnu quality.

and seriously, wtf was up with "acquiring a contest"? I was like, so does that mean they won the boat or just the burden of giving it away? stupid gits...

Ok, listen ....THIS IS NOT SPAM.
Christ, it's a joke people...a real contest, but a joke. Since I have to spell it out for the bitter kiddies.......it's simply a contest to name our yacht. If you read the text I wrote...it just says it's a contest...no yacht. WE DONT EVEN HAVE A YACHT. It's just a contest to name one.

A joke. j-o-k-e.

Calm down....I’m not doing anything with your e-mail....I really don't care that much, so stop saying it's spam.

Remind me just to put on my MeFi t-shirt and act like I care about Star Trek and George Bush to get your guys attention next time.

Man, you guys are some bitter people....and one guy even said "Minus two hit points"....hah, that's great.

Dungeons and Dragons rules!

Here.....how about we call it the SS Awww My Meta Filter Pussy Hurts.

Cuz , maybe that might be more relevant to this group.

eesh. this place needs to lighten up. or grow up. or both.

pekar and m@, here's a clue: email harvesters will generally offer some prize you'd want to win. if this were a harvester they probably would have included the trip to chicago, thereby increasing the chances of you submitting your address. jokes usually will have stupid prizes in an attempt to make you laugh (ie an autographed 8x10, black and white headshot of Brett Presson... Autographed picture of Brett Presson autographed by Peter James Zielinski). understand how that works, now?

you know, you don't have to check your brain at the door before you type metafilter.com.

First off, there's protocol against self-posting. Second, the D&D reference used to be called irony. Third, clever thoughts are seldom accompanied by poor writing.

Like I said, this post is a pile. Now that we see the asses behind it, we can infer the composition of said pile.

God almighty. No one self posted. BWG is not one of the "yacht owners", and the yacht site is not his. pjz, who is one of the owners, has been a MetaFilter member since May 3, 2001 - hopefully he is allowed to comment in the thread. What the hell is the big deal about this post, anyway?

Some names (which will mostly only be relevant to people who've visited the sites of the "yacht owners" -

That's My Yacht!
Netscape Sucks
Incongruous Goatee Boys
Petey and Brettie's Big Ass Boat
A, A, B, A, A, >, >, >
I Got It At Best Buy
Pizza Boy and The Actor Dude
This Yacht Best Viewed At 1024x768

If there is a God, I will win the autographed picture of Brett Presson autographed by Peter James Zielinski.

Thanks for posting this, BWG - I think I found a couple of new weblogs to read.

I don't know if this is a self-link, a buddy-link, or what. But I did notice this is the 2nd time bwg has posted a link to a site involving pjz.

Love the reaction at one of the yachter's sites, too:

Hey! Look Ma! I'm on metafilter (which is probably why many of you are here)!
Megaprops to BWG for giving us a shout out!
Postscript: It's good to see that metafilter is still a haven for the jaded. Thanks for your input folks! Check out the way they show their disapproval by attempting to be clever! Watch as they nitpick to try and look cool!

Wow. What a completely fucked vision of MeFi.

<taking sand out of vagina>

YES! That’s the winner!

I've been schooled.

I'll do my best start adhering to the protocol of Metafilter and I deeply apologize, from my heart of hearts, for not pleasing you guys to the best of my ability! Please feel free to reply to this post with even MORE over used Simpsons quotes and other ironic rhetoric to show this silly 22 year old what you’re made of.

I find it great to see how many people are taking this so seriously. Metafilter is a “webpage!” It’s not that important. Your “protocol” is not that important. Come on, have a sense of humor about it…I am! I mean, I just got ripped a new asshole by a large man who has a penchant for Star Trek and Interior Design! How can I not have a sense of humor about this.

</ taking sand out of vagina>

Acting like a fourth grader aside, you ask for me to be clear and articulate and yet all I get in response is a holier than thou attitude from people who either don’t understand the topic we’re talking about or just aren’t fond of our idea.

I invite you take as long as you need to get off that internet high horse. And I say this knowing full well that all I’ll get in response to this is a whole bunch of replies from fellow web geeks telling me why they’re better than me.

Well, touché. I’m done.

Yes, nurse, I'm afraid it's an advanced case of silica vaginosis. Worst one I've ever seen too!

Can we operate?

Well, the odds are against us, but we've got to try. Fetch my plastic pail and shovel. And my flip-flops.

Not the flip-flops!

Yes, Nurse, there's a lot of sand in that vagina. It may get... pretty rough.

read: don't lecture me on the rules or what mefi is supposed to be about.

<whine>But I did notice this is the 2nd time bwg has posted a link to a site involving pjz.</whine>

though the host domain is the same, the first link was to dependent films, while the second was to analog cereal. while they are both run by PJZ, they are two separate websites in terms of content.

i posted the link to DF (and quite a while ago too) because i thought the web was a great venue for indy filmmakers to promote their creations and wanted to prompt discussion about other film sites that have been discovered. i posted the link about the yacht because it was just silly... no more or no less silly than ant city or stickman kung fu or countless other pointless games that get posted at mefi all the time.

oh and by the way, if any of the complainers had taken the time to check out the rest of site, they might have learned more about those two clowns and realised this was nothing more than sheer goofiness on their parts. hell, you might have even liked their weblogs.

but i digress. apparently some people have zero sense of humour.

To restate the debate that seems to be going on a lot here lately, what makes MeFi special is that we do have some standards, and we do care about protocol. It's what keeps us from degenerating to the level of Fark or Rotten.

I refer you to this recent MetaTalk thread thread; we all have senses of humor, we just prefer to rein them in when we should be discussing something serious, and most of us aren't looking for humor/goofiness on the front page (except on Friday.)

As someone once said, we're trying to have a society here.

Let's take it down a notch, bwg. I'll start by saying that I like the fact that folks like you post goofy or entertaining links, even though I prefer posting history, politics or science art myself. That's one of the things that makes MeFi great.

But one of the other things that makes MeFi great is that when someone screws up and posts a lame link, the self-correcting function kicks in to remind them there's a larger community. And please don't tell me, bwg, that because you've been a member longer than me you're above criticism. None of us are.

One last thing: The sneering generalizations about MeFi from Peter and Brett are just pathetic. Especially while they're obviously loving the attention (and hits) the site is generating for them. MeFi is a free, independent, communal information node that's consistently smart and entertaining. You'd think an independent film geek who's been a member for over a year would understand how rare and valuable that is.

mediareport: Wow. What a completely fucked vision of MeFi.

actually, based on this thread, it's a pretty accurate vision of MeFi.

The sneering generalizations about MeFi from Peter and Brett are just pathetic.

oh, i dunno, being called email harvesters and spammers pretty much justifies their comments, in my opinion. especially when the accusations are so damn absurd and not at all based on any proof.

perhaps i'm a bit touchy on the subject as i've had people accuse my own site of being a harvester (not on mefi). as someone who hates spam, i take it as a considerable insult. i'm sure most bloggers feel the same way, which is why it pisses me off when people toss the accusation off so lightly. the fact that m@ has a site of his own and does this is pretty sad.

MeFi is... consistently smart and entertaining.

it's often entertaining and sometimes smart, but consistently either? hardly.

i'm not saying it's not a great--and unique--place, but off the cuff remarks and accusations like some in this thread make it more embarassing than smart or entertaining.

yeah, i'll second that one.

Listen, how about we just drop this one? eh?

Why don't you guys just go back to your community and just forget about it. There's people on each side and no one is listening.

Regardless of how many times we go over your rules or your etiquette or whatever you like....none of it matters.

You got to say what ya wanted, and judging from the 450 entries to our contest (mostly from MeFi viewers)...some people obviously liked what we had to say and took it with a grain of salt. The rest didn't. That's just fine.

So, feel better about yourselves and let it go please.

Thanks.

No argument from me there. My biggest peeve is people who never admit they're wrong and never apologize for tossing around dumb insults. But what can you do? It's a big place. The yachters don't seem to get that.

Oh yeah, bwg: sorry for implying that you were just boosting a friend's site.
