And science often purports itself as doctrine when trying to explain life.I would be interested in seeing this supported with examples -- it should be easy to do if science "often" does this. My experience of actual science (as opposed to cereal box summaries of science, or pseudoscientific critics' versions thereof) is that it seldom, if ever, attempts to "explain life," and definitely does not "purport itself as doctrine" when it delves into the fundamental issues of biology. This is easy to demonstrate by looking at any prominent journal (login metafilter/metafilter).
Scientists can be just as unwilling to let go of doctrine or outdated thinking as any 'crazed' christian.Individual scientists can and do have all these flaws and many more: and the reason we know it is that they end up looking like idiots when science as a whole progresses inexorably and leaves them in the dust.
