They brought each other carefully selected pebbles

New York Times article "Male Penguins, And Baby Makes Three". "One couple, though, was extraordinary. Not because they were the colony’s only gay penguins, though they were, but because Sphen and Magic looked like they would make great, diligent, careful egg-warming parents. They made the biggest nest, and they sat on it constantly."

Yay gay penguins but did this whole thing read as too anthropomorphic to others?

And Tango Makes Three, the book that bradth27 linked to above, is one of our favorite children's books. We are two women raising three kids, and this book gave our kids a reflection of their own family - and, significantly, IN NATURE. It showed a same-sex family as a completely natural and wonderful thing, and our kids loved it. Highly recommended; regardless of what configuration your own family takes.

It's particularly charming that they are in fact the best parents in the colony -- they were the only one to successfully hatch a chick this year.

did this whole thing read as too anthropomorphic to others

It seemed like behaviors were being described exactly how they were observed without much hypothesizing as to motive beyond what is already known about penguin behavior patterns and the social functions they serve. I didn't really find it anthropomorphizing much at all, truly.

Besides, everyone knows not to anthropomorphize the animals. They hate that.
