Though a couple of the book's subsidiary characters verge on caricature, though the absurd ending feels like a cheap attempt to give the book a big, melodramatic finish, these problems are overshadowed by Mr. McDonell's ability to tell a gripping story. In this debut novel he has constructed a narrative that's as fast as speed, as relentless as acid.The Times has a picture of the young fellow, to boot.
