Keys to Unlock Depression

Michael Yapko is a licensed therapist recognized internationally for his work in clinical applications of hypnosis as well as the treatment of depression. Here’s a talk he gave on how to recover from depression in which he covers the 5 key risk factors (spoiler alert, genetics is not one of them).

The risk factors (which he gets to at about the 24-minute mark) are:
1. Internal orientation
2. Stress generation
3. Ruminating about negative and past events
4. Global thinking
5. Unrealistic expectations

He goes on to briefly outline treatment goals for each factor. These exercises have also been shown to provide robust prevention value against becoming depressed. He winds up the presentation with the most important things to do and to not do when you’re feeling depressed.

That seems like an awful lot of work to alleviate the symptoms, especially when there's a much simpler way.

Thank you for this post, I will watch the video when I am not at work and then have actual feedback

1. Internal orientation (better in here than out there)
2. Stress generation (make and own your own stress)
3. Ruminating about negative and past events (no more new events!)
4. Global thinking (anyone's problems but my own!)
5. Unrealistic expectations (Mary Poppins, my old roommate, they still can't find the
body.)

My question is, "How does this guy know me?" If he expects me to give this all up, then my life will be erased. I am just waiting for Godot. What? Aren't you all waiting for Godot too?

Personally I'm waiting for the world to recognize and handsomely reward my genius. So far it hasn't happened though, and I'm getting a little depressed about it.

Damn you, Mayor West -- I can't wait to see what recommendations Amazon makes from that one...

The speaker is a graduate and member of Alliant "University", a for-profit business that operates by flooding the therapist market with their graduates. The speaker has a worthless "PhD" and runs his own Hypnosis Journal, and is not recognized by the actual international community of scientists. This kind of material does not need further platforming.

Oh wow, I listened to the beginning of this talk. And thought "here's someone deeply dedicated to finding out about depression and its causes for decades, sharing his insight. Priceless material."
And then there's polymodus' comment.......

So the subtitle on the video which OP didn't copy to their post is "Why skills work better than pills". Which- is dangerous talk considering how for a fair few no pills means certain doom. Also not genetic? That's quackery right there, even before gene tests were invented it's fairly obvious that certain strains of depression run in families- its one of those things that is fairly obvious to even a lay observer. Coupled with what polymodus pointed out about the origins of this dude, I really truly believe this content has no place on metafilter.

I imagine it would do me quite a lot of good to stop ruminating about past negative events, though.
