God Bless America Day : Let me detail for them all the ways in which this idea is just wrong. Or is it?

God Bless America Day
I thought that was July Fourth.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the latter link, and thought it was a pretty fair response to the idea. It's pretty clear the organizers of God Bless America Day (GBAD -- a telling acronym) were coming from a very narrow viewpoint that not only excludes the rest of the world but a huge portion of the country they're proposing to celebrate.

I think the underlying concept is a good one -- formally recognizing the day as a memorial to those killed in terrorist attacks -- but it needs to be less Christian oriented and more globally minded. Back to the drawing board, I say.

Aw, let 'em have their fun. It's not like a real holiday or anything. If you make a big stink about it, they'll just get all self-righteous and dig in their heels. If you just ignore them, people will realize what a weak idea it is (if they hear about it at all) and it'll fade away.

The initials for that holiday would be G-Bad. Ironic, no?

I think we should title the holiday "God Help Us All".

And we need to get America back on the right path. It's time to get back to an old-fashioned America. Like our grandparents had.

Ah yes, the lovely America rife with racism, socialism (see FDR- New Deal), and lower life expectancies.

Besides, don't we have a National Day of Prayer? Its not an official state recognized holiday, but isn't that enough?

Besides, Christian national holidays aren't exactly new.

Not to mention the philosophical problem of invoking a benevolent deity on a day of mass tragedy. If baby jesus couldn't stop the attack I doubt he could do much for us in the future through the meaningless concept of a blessing.

Yeah, I think the giveaway that they said "Don't let a bad nickname stick" and they give it an even worse one.

Of course, it could be unintentional irony.

How about 'Fundamentalist Hatred Day', a day when religious and political fundamentalists the world over can separately celebrate their grudges and prejudices, rejoice in the fact that they alone, out of the 50 billion or so human beings who have ever lived on the planet, are blessed by truth, and celebrate by plotting the downfall of their many and various enemies?

This would be truly in the spirit of 9/11.

Ash.

Maybe God didn't save the people in the WTC in their moment of need because He was pissed he didn't have his own holiday. Sure, his son gets one, but not the Big Guy. He's miffed.

I think a better name would be "Snowball's Chance in Hell Day". Maintains the religious theme, but is much more likely to be accepted.

If that fails, let's start a petition to make September 10th "American Sneeze Day". Then, God Bless America Day becomes a simple, mindless day of courtesy known for its glorious displays of hanky waving and wild antihistamine parties.

jesus: "Dad, have you gotten any holidays named after you yet?"

god: "I HAVE NO SON"

How about "screw everyone who doesn't agree with Christian White People Day".

Wait. That's every day. Never mind. Sorry.

Step one:

Ask fundamental religious wackos to explain why a perfect God created a imperfect world.

Step two:

Watch 'em have seizures and fall over dead.

It's how Captain Kirk killed all of those evil computers.

My roommate and I were driving behind a car with a God Bless America bumpersticker, and she commented that those are awfully rude and demanding. They never say "God, could you be a dear and bless America when you get a chance, please?"

GBAD would only perpetuate the stars-n-stripes marketing crap we have had to live with for the past several months. I mean, really. Do "God Bless America" gazing balls for your garden, available at Wal-Mart, really express the ideals of freedom and individuality that the country was founded on, or merely induce vomiting?

So I'm all for Holy Fucking Shit day.

...let's start a petition to make September 10th "American Sneeze Day".

Sure. It could be kinda like Mardi Gras, a big day of parties where we celebrate American excess and superiority in advance of the major buzzkill the following day.

I vote for Holy Fucking Shit day because I can imagine the call I would get from my mom, and it amuses me to no end. (My mom is a grade school teacher with a very grade school teacher kind of voice)
