I was going to comment that dinty_moore's post should give credit to Pop Sonnets, only to find Pop Sonnets' version is completely different.

Cleanse your mind from one of these abominations by listening to Toots and the Maytals’ Country Roads cover.

Alternately, uncleanse your mind with All Star but it's The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky.

Holy crap that is a great cover Sallybrown. Cortex, if that's your speed at all, you should tune into xray on Sunday mornings for the Impact Sound.

This joke NEVER GETS OLD. I love this, all of it. I love every time a variation gets posted. I laughed, I cried, I regained faith in humanity and in Metafilter.

lol I forgot about the Mystery Men tie-in which led to Paul Reubens and Janeane Garafalo being in this music video.

Okay, the use of the instrumental solo in All Star as the whistling part in Country Roads is inspired.

Somebody once told me
There's a statue in the Gobi
That's mostly gone from over the knees
Visage lying in the sand
With a sneer of cold command
Cuz the sculptor knew just how to please

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Empires falling and statues crumbling
Check out the words he left behind
On the statue in the desert that nobody can find:

Hey now, you're a big shot, you think you're so big
Well I'm Ozymandias and look what *I* did

All that's left there is sand
Only shooting stars light the land

cortex: Holy cow, sallybrown, that is great. I don't know these guys at all, thanks for putting them on my radar.

The Toots and the Maytals album this cover of Country Roads comes from is called In the Dark, it’s really great. It also comes from an equally great album Funky Kingston, which is mostly made up of songs from In the Dark, as well as the spectacular single Pressure Drop, and three songs from a previous album, also called Funky Kingston, also absolutely wonderful. Both Funky Kingstons feature a superb cover of Louie Louie.

Also the bass lick that leads from the intro to the refrain in that Louie Louie cover is my all-time favorite bass lick

so I've eaten all the plums . . .

Country Roads but it's a bunch of children in Halifax on ukulele

I think it's just the last couple months catching up with me but that kinda did me in, which is a weird place to be emotionally in my own post about Smashmouth shitposting. It's very pretty, thanks for linking it.

If we're completely abandoning irony in here now, I just found out Brittain Ashford answered the niche yet essential question of What If Great Comet of 1812 But Sadder? with this new cover of Sonya Alone, her song from the show.
