As the kids say, thanks I hate it.

(Well done, though.)

As the kids also say, this is on fleek.

At .75 speed, though.

As mentioned in the YT comments, play it at 0.75x speed.
Chills ... I have chills everywhere.

Bob Rock clearly dropped the ball when he failed to demand a hot saxophone solo in the original. I'm pleased that this oversight has been rectified.
posted by mandolin conspiracy at 10:49 AM on July 30, 2019

Oh wow that .75 thing is no joke.
First I was like oh ok so David Bowie + Metallica = Santana but once you slow it down it really sounds like David Bowie.

Needs Bret McKenzie on the vocals though.

Favorited for reminding me to check the "bowie" tag.

And now we'd like Moonage Daydream done Master of Puppets style, please and thank you.

Well done.

Also, trumpeter gets the award for most "serious promo photo v. actual bandgeek self" I've seen for a long while.

This is amazing, but holy shit by the end I feel like the singer's trying to laser-cut a hole in my forehead with his eyes.

Some of the folks I follow on mastodon pointedly CW with "eye contact" for selfies and other stuff with direct eye contact. It's not something I personally experience any significant level of discomfort with, but I feel like this guy's Intense Video Gaze maybe manages to function as a kind of simulator because, yeah, wowzers.

Also if you listen to the outro at x0.75 as well he sounds increeeeedibly chill.

HUH.

Really well done on the vocal side, and like the horn arrangement. Feel like the guitar is about half right; especially upfront it sounds more like a surf guitar part than anything Nile Rodgers would play, and even as it moves into something that swings a little more, it never reaches Rodgers levels of funk (which: no shame there, nobody reaches Rodgers levels of funk). The one thing I think it's really missing from real-deal Let's Dance-era Bowie is mountains upon mountains of gated reverb snare.

Still, pretty fun, and way better than I could do....

...the drums sound more correct at x.75, too, I guess.

Agree, the vocal is really good, the rest is way too much like the origianl except for sounds, which doesn't really work that well. It would have been better slower.

I was too distracted by the gorgeous guitar to notice the creepy eyes. It's a jazzmaster/tele hybrid called an offset telecaster.

You can change the playback speed of YT videos? Whoa.

...so that doesn't make "Cracked Actor" sound exactly like "Sad But True", but it's still pretty cool.

Fun fact: Metallica are huge fans of Bowie, and apparently they used to listen to his Hunky Dory non-stop during the conception of their third album, Master of Puppets (you know, the greatest metal album of all time), and they actually took the riff from Andy Warhol and put it in Master of Puppets (the song) right after the melodic middle section. Great artists steal, and all that.

Sometimes also called a jazzcaster.

The solo is still wrong though. Too Hammett and not enough SRV, which still seems to me to be totally out of place on the original.

Goddamn, the .75 speed really is better! Especially that sax solo!

Off-top Guitar Chatter: I'm currently currently being treated for acute GAS triggered by the Candy Apple Red HH Meteora. I'm just lucky it doesn't have the maple neck with block inlays last year's model did.

1x speed: "Let's Dance" style
.75x speed: "China Girl" style

Sadly, 1.25x doesn't get you "Modern Love."

1. No Enter Sandman cover thread is complete without the kazoo version. Which would be merely great instead of transcendent were it not for the “drummer’s” (bottom left corner) metal face.

2. This was great, really well done.

3. I love how everyone’s “trying too hard” Bowie is actually a spot-on Peter Murphy.

Only about 10%, if that, of Postmodern Jukebox things are good, while 100% of this (at 75% speed) was good, so, you know.

Oh my god. I’m a huge fan of both of those albums and never heard this. Mind blown.
