Salon's Editor answers his (many) critics but he doesn't seem to be backing down at all.
I wanted to know why they couldn't use their new back end technology with the old design. I hate the old design.

I was on the site last night, and they had the font pumped up to what looked like 14pts. It barely fit in the columns.
Now it looks like they've settled for a 12pt font, which is still a tight squeeze. (and besides, you're not 'supposed' to use points. I think it's a cardinal sin (-:).
Patching software is one thing . . but patching a design?
