Who is the internet: Dril, or Bruce Chatwin?

For some context on Chatwin I recommend this excellent article by Richard Cooke in The Monthly, from 2017, The Songline's thirtieth anniversary.
Dril is, of course, transcendent and I wouldn't insult you by trying to contextualise his frightening genius with mere links.

(FWIW, digging through the references of this post is as much a project as, and as rewarding as, reading your novels, RNTP.)

No matter what the argument is in this article, the idea that the internet “is” one of two white men, as decided by other white men, is just incredibly old-fashioned and entirely lacking awareness of the broader world.

It is difficult to accurately categorize dril as either white or man. He is a pixie, a fae being, capable of dabbling in any realm when a whim catches him.

Dismissing something you haven’t even bothered to look at, that’s the internet.

Siri, show me an example of the Default Man.

I’m getting to the point with articles like these that I really want to pursue an advanced degree in the anthropology of shitposting.

Non-millennials do not understand shitposting—its origins, forms, social function, range of expression. Shitposts are not synonymous with memes. Some memes are shitposts. Some shitposts are memes. But they are both distinct forms of internet culture.

We choose not to. We don't care.

Truthpoint looks ... terrible.

The first episode was really, really shoddy and not in a good way but I hope it picks up because I love Dril. It has promise (especially Truthbot) but they basically just read from their computers in an awkward, intro level college class sort of way. I expected some level of "this is garbage" but for it to be funny and on point in the spirit of shitposting but it was mostly uncomfortable and boring.

That other guy can fuck off tho, who even is he? Just make it Dril with guests.

Gen X understands shitposting. Robot Chicken is shitposting, some parts of South Park are shitposting. I would argue that its essence is even older than that. Dorothy Parker, were she alive now, would be a fabulous shitposter. Sylvia Plath, too.

The other guy is @eedrk, and he's really funny! He's nowhere near the phenomenon that Dril is, but he can be pretty sharp and gets some unexpected laughs from me.

On Twitter, that is. Neither he nor Dril seem remotely prepared to have cameras pointed at them, so maybe I'll check in on them if they make it to season 12 or so.

Some things just can't transition to other media. For example, movies based on things without a narrative structure like board games or video games are usually terrible. @dril and @eedrk have never had to do dialog before, just one-liners. Completely different ballgame.

Not in reference to you, but because it is among my favorite cartoons and seems relevant.

Chatwin is the Internet because of his great love of Moleskine notebooks.
