I've always been a huge fan of his short stories, especially the "White Hart" stories. Clarke should be known for so much more than just 2001.

The investiture was delayed at Sir Arthur's request after he was accused of being a child molester by a London tabloid. The allegation was never proved.

Okay, is it possible for London Tabloids to go any lower? What's next, kidnapping babies in order to force their celebrity parents to eat their own filth?

The allegation was never proved

Well I reckon the way it's reported on Yahoo would suggest that they are no better than the rabid Fleet street tabloids.
Once you have been accused you are always reported as a childmolester that hasn't been caught - gives some foundation for making it illegal to report in the press any allegations until they have been proven!!
Sir Arthur may not have a long time left on this planet but you gotta think that this will hound him for the rest of his days one way or another.
Imagine the implications if he was say 20 years old??!!

I remember a thread about Clarke a few months ago on Trolldot. A couple of the native troglodytes siezed on the "pedophilia" story and kept going on and on about it.

Aw, cmon; it's pertinent in the story: if he asked that the investiture be delayed, that's news, and you can't exactly avoid mentioning *why* someone would ask not to be a knight, *yet*, can you?

I think baylink's right, even a cynic must admit there was an objective reason to have it in the story. It's a shame it has to follow him around like this, though.
