"Hi, welcome to Under a Rock with Tig Notaro. I'm Tig Notaro. I'm a comedian and I don't follow pop culture. I don't watch a lot of TV or movies. So I have a really hard time recognizing famous people. And on this show I interview famous people to try and figure out who they are. Please welcome… this person."

I have only marginally better cultural awareness than Tig, it would seem (this is not some sort of humble-brag, btw. It's just a fact).
I also would not have recognized Lena "Cersei" Headey in a million years. She looks completely different.

To the shows credit, it is a little remarkable how similarly deadpan both Alexa and Notaro are.This is not wrong.

Yes I only know three of the names and would only have recognized Tony Shalhoub, and that would've been from Wings, had a roommate for a couple years, only time had a TV in the house in my lifetime. And Big Night of course.

Now that she's a part of the Star Trek Universe, she's become the exact kind of celebrity she would have on her own show. That said, it's sad she missed interviewing D.C.Fontana and Rene Auberjonois.

This show would make a fine B or C story on Discovery. Like, Stamets is out sick and Tig takes over engineering to do this show with Federation dignitaries.

From the Paste review: My only hope is that they get progressively bigger guests as the season goes on. There are five more episodes, and I’m ready to see Tig not recognize Jimmy Carter or DJ Khaled.
I love that this particular pairing is presented as the apotheosis of fame.

This is more or less my relationship to pop culture.
I know a little about what's going on in a variety of things, because they're ubiquitous parts of the conversations I have with people, with things I see posted on the net, with promotional banners in stores, and so on. Most pop culture don't interest me, and I'm more interested in other things instead.
It's not like I scream the moment somebody begins telling me about a TV show and continue screaming until they give up and go away. I simply don't bother to watch the shows or play the games, and I don't actively seek out more information about the things I've heard of.

Notaro is the only name in this post whose work I would recognize (she's great). Without resorting to Google, I'm pretty confident only that one's a cook (memorable name) and another is a former singer or rapper (another memorable name), and I have no idea what any of them look or sound like. Just Tig Notaro. So this looks like it was made for me.

I’m hypersensitive to cringe, and it’s not that cringeworthy - everyone involved seems to be various shades of amused and delighted to be doing an interview where the host is genuinely struggling to come to terms with their celebrity and is relieved to be able to engage with them as a person. It’s very nice.

Not like between two ferns at all. More an earnest and nice and dryly funny person just not grokking who a celeb. Like when a celeb or pro athlete gets pulled for an person on the street interview and the local tv journalist has no idea who they're talking to but still pleasantly asking them questions

I'm 7/10, but VanDerBeek I only remember as being a young guy on some teevee drama show from around 2000? So I can't say I really know who he is. He just has an interesting name so it stuck in my head.

I dunno Eisen is one of those I'd place in the Shaloub category. He's been around for awhile.

Love Tig, love the premise, love the whole tone (though I will still decline to have an Alexa device in my ho’me).
The only one of these guests I’ve never heard of is Rich Eisen, and though I know who Wolfgang Puck is, I’d probably need a couple of hints to match his face to his name. I don’t say this as a brag nor self-deprecatingly, it’s just a data point since we’re all sharing.
But the most amazing part of this show is how Lena Headey showed up cosplaying as every woman I had a crush on in college.

If you're unfamiliar with James Van Der Been absent his teenage work, I highly recommend checking out Don't Trust the B in Apt 23 (biggest bad name to good show ratio of all time), in which he plays a parodied outsized version of himself. It's remarkably great, and he has no problem making fun of himself.

Lena Headey is almost unrecognizable to me here. She smiles so much! I only know her from GoT and I'm pretty sure she never cracked a genuine smile on that show once in eight years—not counting self-satisfied or ironic sneers.

Oddly, despite being mostly outside of pop culture for the past decade or so, I recognize everybody except Rich Eisen, and learning he's an NFL commentator, that makes sense.

2/10 for me (where'd you get 11 -- by following the link?), and I wouldn't know what either of them look like. I certainly get that thing hopping off the bus around 2000. By 2004 no one was talking about the previous night's hot show around the water cooler anymore, and there were enough other interesting things going on.
Seems like I should mention how much Laugh-In sucks, both watching it as a kid when it was the previous night's hot show, and more recently watching YT clips.

Why would someone use the same name as that yummy Finnish fish & potato pie? Either her parents were hugely into the Baltic treat, or some agent played a trick on her. Anyway, I needed the clue to figure out who she was, but would never have placed the name.

I'm trying to decide if these are trimmed to time and there's more free association and riffing out there, or if they're just editing out a lot of dead ends. It feels like there's a lot more happening than ended up in the segments, but on the other hand I could see it getting tiring after the 20th minute, too.

I've heard of most of them, but probably wouldn't recognize most. Lena Headey is less than a decade younger than me, but with the glasses on, and not looking too closely, she could pass for a dressed-down Daisy Ridley--they have close to the same smile. Tony Shalhoub I got quickly enough, probably because of Galaxy Quest. That's about it.

This was a delight! The only person I wasn't familiar with was Rich Eisen, but he came in with a big enough personality to still make that episode a lot of fun despite me not being in on the joke like I was with the others. Great concept and even better execution.

Other than Tig Notaro, as far as I know I've never even heard any of those names. And Tig Notaro I knew only her name, and maybe sortof had her pegged as a comic. But I'd not have wanted to bet on that.

Thank you, rogerroger -- I selected this one to watch base upon your recommendation. Wyclef Jean reminds me a lot of my younger brother, a happy and happy-go-lucky person. And my brother is a musician, too, I could see him hauling out a guitar then and there, more likely a sax. My younger brother is not a black guy born in Haiti though, and I doubt he's ever even led a mule, much less ridden one. I love him regardless.

I don't know a lot of the names but Tony Shalhoub ? I'm not the biggest TV watcher but c'mon.... Monk was and is an enormous contribution to the common culture. Tig Notaro's ignorance of his name was just... ignorant. It's like not knowing who Peter Falk or Patrick Stewart are. Her show is well named.

OK, I just watched the Kaley Cuoco one. That was really interesting. I would have guessed she was a comedian. That's got to be weird for a 'famous' person to not be recognized. A friend of mine saw Bruce Springsteen at a little dance bar in the early '80's. He was dancing with this young woman who had no clue who he was, and he liked that she treated him like a regular guy.
Anyway, I recognize 2 names from the list, and could even tell you with some confidence that Puck is/was a chef. Would not have recognized him though. The name Tig Notaro sounded familiar, but I was thinking of some musical performer. It was fun to identify with her. She seemed perfectly comfortable with not knowing.
I think I checked out of pop culture even before Tig did, and mostly only see it in the checkout lines at the grocery store. (Also what I learn here. Now I know who Tig Notaro is.) I don't feel like I'm under a rock, though. I feel like pop culture left me before I left it.

The thing I most enjoy about thin-tail culture is that I can be blissfully ignorant of most of the people on that list under the age of 40 ... I still resent as someone who didn't watch their shows or eat in their restaurants that the prior belly-of-the-curve-culture inflicted upon me an awareness of Melissa Joan Hart, James Van Der Beek and Wolfgang Puck, for all that I have nothing against, or I suppose, for, them as people or actors/chefs.

A decade and a half ago I was in New York City with my then-sweetie (nine years my junior) and we passed a red carpet event where some minor celebrities were working their way up the rope line. On one side of the red carpet was a three-named actress (Melissa Joan Hart? Evan Rachel Wood? Sarah Michelle Gellar? Jennifer Love Hewitt?) and on the other was Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr.

OK, I've actually heard of Tommy Tiernan! He's very funny!
These days, I only know of the people who get ridiculously famous, like Lil NasX, Cardi B, Billie Eilish. TV and most movies and most pop music, not so much. OLD! For pop culture purposes, I'm old and no one cares what I think or wishes to get my attention. And that's OK, I'm fine with that.

OK, I've actually heard of Tommy Tiernan! He's very funny!
These days, I only know of the people who get ridiculously famous, like Lil NasX, Cardi B, Billie Eilish. TV and most movies and most pop music, not so much. OLD! For pop culture purposes, I'm old and no one cares what I think or wishes to get my attention. And that's OK, I'm fine with that.

Heh, come to think of it, I really didn't know who Tig Notaro is either, other than maybe a comedian or comedy writer that is mentioned here sometimes? It does come across as heavily edited in a weird way. And yeah, it's a ham-handed ad for Alexa. But I enjoyed the few I watched.
(It's also a weird ad for Alexa. I should buy an Alexa to use as a sort of post-era-of-irony comedy prop? I still don't get the appeal of those things)

I watched the one with Julie Bowen. Even though I have seen many, many episodes of "Modern Family," I would not have been able to name the actor. Might have got Clare Dunphy under duress, never Julie Bowen.

Hey, a case where it can be *good* to comment without RTFA (WTFVs?). I have kind of a skimming relationship to most pop culture, picking it up by osmosis without consuming these days, so let's see how I do.

I watched the James van der Beek one months ago and then forgot about this. Thanks for the reminder! I just watched all of them. (Sorry, boss). I know who all the people are but I don't know that I'd recognize them on the street - definitely not Kaley Cuoco, and maybe not Lena Headly and Julie Bowen, although I think them being styled so differently from their characters had a lot to do with it.
The Alexa stuff is kind of a bummer, but I also think Tig is great and you know, artists have to make money somehow. This is the world we live in.

After watching a few episodes I think it could use some tweaking. Tig's complete unawareness of who they are is fun, but I'd like to see a little more interviewing of them as a person. It would probably go into some bizarre directions.
The mix of celebrities is fun. There are people I know of and recognize (Tony Shalhoub and, probably, Wolfgang Puck), people I know of and am surprised I didn't recognize (Lena Headey, who looks about 18 in that interview), people I know of and would never have recognized (Wyclef Jean), and people I've sort of vaguely heard of or have heard of the show they were in, but would never have identified in a million years. I know that "Dawson's Creek" was a show, but that's it. Ditto for "8 Simple Rules". I'd probably recognize a couple of people from "Big Bang Theory", but would never come up with their names (and Kaley Cuoco would not be one of the ones I'd recognize. There are a lot of young, blond actresses in Hollywood and they are all starting to blend together for me. Unless I'm a fan, I have no chance of telling them apart).

Till recently I thought Cardi B was Kim Kardashian, and failed to recognize the latter in a Facebook post. But then back when people were watching Beverly Hills 90210 I could not keep Luke Perry and the other guy (Brandon? Brendon?) straight because it was two generic-looking guys with cool hair and sideburns. I did recognize 4/10 names on the list:

* Tony Shalhoub - was on a thing called Monk that was supposed to be good.

Sorry, rhizome, I'm 53 and I've never heard of Tony Shalhoub. (What is metafilter age BTW?) I've heard of Wolfgang Puck and Wyclef Jean, but I couldn't pick either of them out of a lineup. I *might* recognize Kaley Cuoco, but it depends on her haircut, I think.

Yes - it was lovely, but it felt like it stopped just as it was getting going. The bit about guessing the guest is a fun intro, but then a fuller interview would be good.
It works because Tig is so good, and they've chosen the guests wisely. With other people involved it could be dreadful.

I stayed up late watching all of these, so thank you for posting this charming set of distractions. I know who all those people are, although Howerton and Headey are the least familiar to me. I thought Tony Shalhoub and Kaley Cuoco were super charming.

Well, he's the face of the NFL Network, so if you don't care about football it's understandable. Not everyone has seen him run the 40 yard dash during 3-day Combine coverage on multiple occasions.
On the other hand, 46 of the 50 highest rated TV programs this year are NFL games, so he's pretty darned famous too. Perfect choice for this show.

Rich Eisen is really famous and I'm most familiar with him from his SportsCenter days, but I sat there watching that interview thinking, "would I really recognize him on the street?" I don't know if it's the lack of context or what, but he doesn't look like I'd expect. Maybe it's the balding.

I can relate to Tig on this. I often fail to recognize people I know personally, let alone celebrities. I once served an icee to Venus Williams and chatted briefly without realizing who she was. One of my coworkers had to come over and tell me I had just made idle conversatoin with one of the world's most famous and recognizable athletes, after which it seemed abundantly obvious who she was because Venus Williams looks like a comic book super hero walking around in the real world, but somehow I missed it. She was nice.

I just watched all of these and really love Tig and the concept. It’s a fun watch. A couple of the guests didn’t seem to click totally, but enough of them seemed to be having a good time. I especially liked how some of them were genuinely enjoying not being recognized.

JVDB was also good in The Rules of Attraction, a decent, para-prequel to American Psycho made by the Tarantino-pal who did Killing Zoe (a movie probably about as well-known as Tony Shalhoub) and who also wrote Pulp Fiction.

Lena Headey is almost unrecognizable to me here. She smiles so much! I only know her from GoT and I'm pretty sure she never cracked a genuine smile on that show once in eight years—not counting self-satisfied or ironic sneers.
Funnily enough, I only really know Lena Headey from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (fantastic, by the by), and while the sneer quotient is quite a bit lower, your comment still basically applies otherwise!

First of all, all these years I thought her name was Lena Head-ly.
Second, as she was one of few whose name I recognized and whom I thought I would recognize on sight, to be presented with this extremely un-Cersei-looking woman, I wish her name hadn't been on the episode title so I could've played along. Because, holy shit with the glasses and the hair and the laughing, I am gobsmacked.
It's like when I found out that the psycho assassin actress in Killing Eve, Jody Cormer, was the same as the sweet teenage health care aide trying to take care of her falling apart family and elderly patients in Remember Me. >POW!< head explodes.

I love “UARWTN”, love Tig.
I don’t think Tig would make a very good interview show without the premise.
Being an actual talk-show host is a skill. Jimmy Fallon sucks. Dick Cavett was the Demigod of intellectual discussion on TV. Johnny Carson could interview anybody. Graham Norton is charming, informed, AND provides wine for those waiting in the Green Rooom.
Oprah is... Oprah. ‘Nuff said.
Sean Evans of “Hot Ones” is one of the best currently. He’s one of the best because not only does he know the guest, but he’s got one of the better research teams out there; every interview has someone complimenting him on good questions that few people ask.
Tig is warm and pleasant and soothing like a cup pf tea on a cold afternoon. Love it. “Under a Rock” is perfect because of the premise.
“Tea Time with Tig” would be... just another interview show in a sea of them, done by someone not conversant in popular culture.
She’s quirky and sweet and non-threatening. But I really don’t think she has the chops to sit down with a prepared guest and interview them And make it an interesting watch. Her strengths lie elsewhere.

A decade ago I was dispatched by my job to a remote snowy posting where I found myself essentially looking after a closed-for-the-season Victorian hotel (think The Shining but with far fewer axe murders). I brought along a couple of DVD boxed sets to pass my evenings; as I had just watched season one of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I brought along season two. The other boxed set was the complete series of The Wire.
I still have never seen the second season of The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

It's like not knowing who Peter Falk or Patrick Stewart are.
Stewart's a bit less likely, since TNG and the X-Men movies that he was in were more recently popular and Picard has gotten a lot of buzz, but Peter Falk? Columbo was a great character, but probably most non-boomers these days know him as the grandpa from The Princess Bride, and may not know the actor's name.

Oooh, interesting! I've never seen Columbo, but the entire time I was watching him in Wings of Desire, I had a feeling that there was a big cultural trope/undercurrent I was just utterly missing out on. This helps.

A friend was a Japanese language and literature major who back in the day taught English in Japan as alternate service to the draft. His high school students were always begging him to do the classic Colombo wind up 'Oh, and I just have one more question, etc...' in Japanese or English but he'd never seen either.
