Welcome to your 40s, Kelsey. Welcome to not giving a s**t at the gym. (NSFW for language and pixelated nudity.) The Baroness von Sketch Show tackles that magic moment where you hit your 40s and stop caring so much about what others think in the gym locker room. Also: Perimenopause and what would happen if women ran the world. The subversive appeal of Baroness von Sketch, feminist-and-queer-friendly comedy by four Canadian women in their 40s.

Seems to be geoblocked for the USA

There is a copy of the video at the IFC Youtube channel. Maybe the link can be switched out?

Or here.

Baroness von Sketch is what you get when you have women running, acting, and writing SNL. Best sketch comedy show EVER.

No dice on either video.

I think the IFC link will be region-blocked outside the US or at least in Canada, because YouTube won't even let me see IFC's BvS videos in search results, so please don't replace links that don't work in the US with ones that might only work in the US. Adding rather than replacing would be good.

One of my friends and I were talking the other day about the "After?!" sketch. We were at a restaurant having a late dinner -- we'd intended to see an 830 movie and just eat popcorn, but the movie was sold out so we went for dinner instead -- and the waitress asked us what our plans were for after dinner, and we were both like "It's after 10pm. Our plans are to go home and go to bed, obv!" And then we laughed and laughed and laughed just like we were in the sketch.

We are women over 40 and the BvS ladies see us. I can't even tell you how rare that is in modern media.

Two of them also host the new season of Great Canadian Baking Show, which makes me love them more.

I've never even heard of Baroness von Sketch Show before so this is enlightening even if I can't watch the videos immediately.

I've seen a couple of them and love them so much that it kills to not be able to watch them!

This link appears to work in the US for the "Welcome to your 40s" clip.

The CBC's Schitt's Creek and Baroness von Sketch are the only two programs I'll make a point of watching when they're broadcast Tuesday nights - BvS is consistently hilarious, even if it might be a bit Toronto-centric for some audiences (e.g. skits about cottage rules, or moving to Hamilton).
It's on Canadian Netflix so it might be on Netflix elsewhere.

My local community centers have all been remodeled to those weird open space locker rooms, except they are only like 20X20 (with tons of open space in the middle for some reason). Lots of unexpected nudity, like if everyone around you in an airliner was naked.

Schitt's Creek is on US Netflix, as are both Portlandia and Documentary Now (both IFC productions)... so that gives me hope that Baroness von Sketch would be available somewhere on US streaming?

Some seasons of Baroness von Sketch are on Canadian Netflix, so for those with generous Canuck friends who share their Netflix, that's another option.

We've been watching (and loving) it in the US through Amazon's streaming, although that does mean we have to buy it by the season.

Baroness von Sketch is a god damned national treasure. My wife and I are constantly quoting sketches.

FWIW, 4th season of Baroness Von Sketch Show is available on CBC Gem, free of charge, no need for an account. I think the other 3 seasons are available if you make an account, but free I think.

My girlfriend introduced me to this show when we were hungover one Sunday. We must have watched hours of it. I remember this sketch really well because I had just been reflecting on how much less stressful locker rooms and bars have become now that I'm a flabby middle aged dude and no one pays attention to me. It also made me think of the older guys at the in the YMCA locker room who blow dry their pubes while chatting it up to anyone within chatting distance. I'm probably going to be one of them someday.

Baroness von Sketch is indeed amazing.

DRY SHAMPOO - IT'S THIS DRY SHAMPOO

And the Reggie Watts sketch was amazing.

If you're a US cable subscriber, IFC broadcasts it and has episodes on-demand.

Also it's not super surprising that the CBC is running this - they ran Kids in the Hall and Four on the Floor back in the day. My only real disappointment is that they don't run more sketch comedy shows like this.
posted by GuyZero at 11:34 AM on December 10, 2019 [2 favorites]

I suspect they'd like to. It's really hard to do comedy this well.

I adore this show. I've flipped links for various sketches to people I know countless times. My oldest brother snores like a chainsaw (and refuses to do anything constructive about it, the selfish asshole), and my sister-in-law really enjoyed the Snoring sketch.

I send the Siri one to anyone who urges me to get a cellphone, explaining that it could really put a cramp in my lovelife.

Moors is awesome -- the "mad first wife" tries to talk some sense into the Bronte sisters.

You Owe Me is a cathartic sketch for a single woman to watch.

As a well-endowed woman, I related painfully well to New Bra.

I watch Quirkiest Girl occasionally to remind myself not to be... like that.

I could seriously spend all day linking to the BvS sketches I love and relate to. I would have done an FPP on it ages ago if it hadn't been for the "only in Canada" availability thing.

The nude selfies in your 40s one is my absolutely favorite. Laughed so hard I cried. Then binge watched a whole bunch of episodes (I pay $5 a month for the app subscription so I can watch CBC news network). It really deserves international recognition!

I love BvS so much! I’ve watched the current season on IFC and then started watching season 1 via their site yesterday. It was very surprising to have just seen that sketch and then this post so soon after. Yay!!

I found BvS through the "land acknowledgement" skit and have been hooked ever since. I love it.

This show is extremely good. I will say it sometimes strikes me as surprisingly not-diverse for something shot in Toronto, which is kind of surprising. They recently did a sale of props etc. near me and I was tempted to check it out although I can't think of anything 'iconic' (spray shampoo maybe?).

Carolyn Taylor and Aurora Browne are also the hosts for the Great Canadian Baking Show in the most recent season, in case you wanted to see more of them.

I always feel bad for the young women at the gym desperately concealing their bodies while changing/going to the shower. YOU'LL NEVER LOOK BETTER, GIRLS.

Loved it. It has not escaped my attention that the majority of people who attend naturist resorts--at least in the US--are middle-aged and older, per David Sedaris and many other observers.

A great show, and is actually true sketch comedy as only cross-dressing members of the Commonwealth seem to be able to pull off in an entertaining way (and Almost Live, don't forget about them but if you live in Seattle I think they're still re-running those shows).

(Citizen Kane! It was Citizen Kane!).
(Well, I certainly didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!)

One of my favorite parts of the Baroness von Sketch show are the little in-progress conversations at the beginning of many sketches:

"And that's why you can't trust people who own fishtanks."
"What's your doctor's name? Oh, Kevorkian?"

I also love this show. The Psych-Up Salad one is a favourite, though I deeply, deeply relate to the dry shampoo one.

Yep! Gem accounts are free (there's a no-ad premium option). No idea if Gem works with outside-of-Canada IP addresses though.

I've enjoyed the hell out of all the seasons of Baroness von Sketch to date, but Season 4 takes it up another level. They're so, so good and getting better.

Meredith MacNeill totally commits to physical comedy bits.

I'll do it!

Huh. When I went to college young women were all about nonchalantly ambling nude through our locker rooms. And doing the classics reading nude in the sauna. West Coast bubble? 1990s bubble?

For those suggesting borrowing the Netflix login of a generous Canuck - unfortunately, that's not how Netflix geo-blocking works. If you are a Canadian subscriber and you travel to the United States, you can only see content that is available in the United States, and vice-versa for Americans traveling to Canada. It's based on the location of your login, not the location of your account.

My watch list flips back and forth every time I cross the border.

I think Baroness von Sketch is on American IFC, or at least that's where I see it listed for my provider. They're showing season 4 apparently.

Perimenopause for people with Facebook.

And yes, it's always perimenopause.

Argh, I’m sorry about the geo blocking! I didn’t realize CBC was doing that with their YouTube clips. Annoying. Thanks to all who posted other ways to watch.

I will say I have had all the conversations in the “Perimenopause” sketch, including the conversation at the end with the doctor. WTF, man? Like, you’re the one who went to medical school!

I want everyone to see this show, but I am taking a petty moment to enjot for once being on the side of a surprise geoblocking where I'm the one who can see the thing.

For reals, Jon Mitchell, I’m so used to being the one seeing the “This video is blocked in your country” that it honestly doesn’t occur to me I’d ever be able to see stuff blocked for others.

The line about, "Well, it can last up to 10 years..." was verbatim from my midwife. The implication was basically if these symptoms last for the next 10 years, I guess it was perimenopause all along, but if they go away, maybe it wasn't? Haha who knows! Like, idk, aren't you supposed to know?

And yes, it's always perimenopause.

I guess that replaces the thing where they always always always test you to see if you're pregnant if you go in as a younger woman. Sorry it's all just "women things".
