What you watch can now get you arrested. 115, yes 115 people were jailed for attending a club where there was a live sex show on stage. Of course, the cops watched the show for three hours before busting them all. I wonder how many murders were committed that same night in Atlanta..

They don't really have anything better then chasing porn lovers ? I suggest, in no particular order:

1) prosecuting people who make childs work fulltime and loan sharks
2) arresting pushers, drug smugglers, murderers, rapers, serial killers, wife/husband/kids beaters/ domestic violence
3) look around for terrorism activities

I don't think porn is a top priority issue.

Hahaha...

I heard on the radio that a girl involved in one of the sex acts was 16, but she was using a fake id, or something like that. Didn't see that mentioned in the article.

The article and other reports are also unclear as to whether the cops took 3 hours to watch it and then 3 hours to book them, or watched it for say 20 minutes and then book the perps.

I have the feeling that the owners/managers of an unlicensed night club that is serving liquor without a license to patrons watching a sex show in an overcrowded former warehouse, aren't going to check anyones ID.

Do you think that the sixteen year old girl might have been a bit intoxicated on that illegal liquor and that might have affected her reasoning to perform sexually in front of hundreds of patrons? Just a thought.

Quick question:
If this Amanda Jones was charged with "public indecency", what about the "about 10 guys" that were on the stage with her?

There is no mention of their names, but they go out of their way to mention her full name, age and current city/town of residence. That strikes me as a bit unfair.

According to one of your links, you can also legally marry your first cousin in places like California and Hawaii. Only 4 states of the 23 listed there are in the so-called "South".

And the antiquated sodomy laws you linked to are on the books in many states, especially via local municipalities and have nothing to do with reality.

California was the first state to make it illegal for gay couples to marry - a very "Southern" stereotype, wouldn't you say?

I sure hope when I do get married, it's still legal to have kids in the south.

... err it seems to me that if she was 16, the police would be prohibited from mentioning her name as she's not a legal adult. The newspaper would be ethically bound from disclosing her name as well, but they still might breech their ethics in the name of a good scandal (ombudsman be damned).

Is age a problem ? I don't think so, the problem is : was she willing or not ? Did somebody force her by threat or
phsycal violence ? That is the problem. Did she know that you can get sexually transmitted diseases or become pregnant ? Guess it's hi-time for mandatory sexual education in schools, I think it's better for girls and boys to know about the goods and the bads of sex BEFORE they have sex.

Telling them "you can't have sex till you're 18 because it's evil" is simply idiotic: sex is natural, you can't stop it, but you can learn about it.

Actually, most of us that were born/raised here consider Texas to be part of the South. Now, I'll grant you, we're west of the Mississippi...but we're still south of any area that could be termed North. :)

Also, Texas did fight for the Confederacy.

Besides, anyone who can make biscuits and gravy like I can, must be from the deep south. :)

Actually, Florida is a bit of an anomaly. The beach and sun culture seems to draw a lot of "semi-natives" (I think they call you that after 10 years or so of residence) who enjoy the alternative lifestyles, but it's also full of good old Bible Belt bluenoses who think they should be prosecuted like crazy. More swing clubs per capita, probably, than anyplace but California; and more prosecutions, too.

Um ... but this was Georgia. Which has the same problem, at least in Atlanta, which has become quite cosmopolitan since they got air-conditioning. I've heard constructions on the order of "There's Atlanta, and then there's Georgia."

mr_roboto: Yes, I am very defensive on this topic, as I have grown oh-so-weary with the Southern stereotypes. I've encountered it my entire life. (I'm from Huntsville, Alabama, but now live in Los Angeles. Huntsville doesn't really fit many of the stereotypes.)

dejah420: For the purposes of this discussion, I'm talking about stereotypes with regards to "the South" (which generally come up on any thread/posting that contain any of the magic words: Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, or Mississippi.) Texas has stereotypes of it's own involving "western", not "southern".

I love how this thread has turned into a "south-not south" discussion. Thread drift just doesn't get better than this.

For my part, when I went to SMU I understood that Dallas was the western-most "eastern" city in the country, while Fort Worth was the eastern-most "western" city. Texas is a state all right - of mind.

I was surprise the article I posted was not an earlier post in a meta thread. I heard about it and even thought of posting it for discussion, yet I saw it all weekend long on CNN in heavy discussion as that is where CNN is based. Yet to me it was old at that point. And we are talking about current events (6/2902) and laws not opinions, only if you agree or not. So the finger you point remember it is the one I gave you to point back, as your finger is my reference points that I gave to you. It was nice I didn't just use a link on Georgia only, but the world.

And jca, yes I'll agree with, yet I lived there and I found no one who agreed, in person funny, no one I knew.

Yet in some circles it's is looked down on, and I think these laws are weird if you follow the thinking of them. I can go deeper yet I won't as no one chooses their birth.

And I live in Texas don't get me started, I can go both ways. And Dallas take your map of the United States, fold it in half and you will find it near the crease, interesting if you say south, north or even east and west, I was not trolling for bait, yet the club in the article did. So again sorry to those in the south and north, as I'm and American Citizen of The United States.

I should have gone with the original, after preview the comments and all the puns you wonder if the article was written for the puns in it or the facts.

East Texas also has kudzu. It was also, however, recently found in Oregon - the first instance of it being found west of Texas, actually. I'm not sure what to make of that. Live sex shows with minors in Atlanta and kudzu in Oregon - two things I'd like to put out of my mind.

I don't think that this can be really blamed as a Southern thing. After all, various northern politicians have attempted to make their name by attacking public displays of sexuality. For example we have the cleanup of Times Square, Cincinnati's war against Robert Mapplethorpe and Larry Flint, and Indianapolis has spawned both one of the more restrictive anti-pornography acts but also Dan Quayle. I can't imagine the story being much different if it had occurred anywhere else in the United States.

In fact, one of the more frustrating things about North-South politics in the United States is that people in the North frequently use the South in order to cop a claim that they are more progressive than they actually are. I have not found northern states to be all that more open-minded, they just pretend they are.
