You must hack. It's your duty as an American. Godspeed, dear patriots.

This makes sense. Maybe now Microsoft can go back to innovating rather than dealing with security. posted by TskTsk at 2:44 PM on July 31, 2002
A completely-off-the-subject complaint: I wish the Associated Press reporter who wrote that story would hack into his company's stylebook and learn that AP prefers adviser to advisor.
Sorry for the interruption. I get compulsive sometimes. posted by TBoneMcCool at 2:55 PM on July 31, 2002
And yet if you do hack, you get threats from the company you've exposed. (Thread from earlier today.) posted by dejah420 at 3:09 PM on July 31, 2002
Doh. Quonsar is the clever one here. I'll just go off, cat like, and pretend I meant to be an idiot. :) posted by dejah420 at 3:11 PM on July 31, 2002
"Clarke said the hackers should be responsible about reporting the programming mistakes. A hacker should contact the software maker first, he said, then go to the government if the software maker doesn't respond soon."
Is this a joke? If not, are the software makers going to put these hackers on their payroll?
"Clarke said hackers shouldn't help criminals by showing how to exploit a programming bug before the software maker has a chance to fix the problem by issuing a patch, or fix.
Is this a joke too? Hackers ARE criminals, and have been viciously persecuted by software companies, even when they are unbelievably kind and responsible.
It's a joke, and in poor taste, I posted by zekinskia at 3:37 PM on July 31, 2002
Examining the insides of software or hardware and finding bugs nobody else has seen makes you a hacker. Reporting them to the right people so as to make the technology better for the consumers makes you a responsible person. Exploiting the same holes for your personal gain or mischeif would be what makes you a criminal.
Imho, anyway. posted by tomorama at 4:35 PM on July 31, 2002
