Stravos, "potzrebie", "bleech(y)", "glitch", "hoo-hah" and "schivenhutt" are phonetic variants on many of the Mulberry Street/Little Odessa/Lawn Guyland dialects which were part of the upbringing of "the usual gang of idiots" that created & produced MAD over the years. "Schivenhutt!" in particular is actually an exaggeration of an actual German rugby cheer, which explains why those who exclaimed it in the magazine often did so while kicking somebody's teeth out . Alfred E. Neuman (originally known as Farfie Finkledale) was supposedly based on banners along the Coney Island Midway parodying Irishmen. The Looney Tunes characters, as well as some of the Walter Lantz characters from the 50's TV version of Woody Woodpecker (Mrs. Meaney, Dooley O'Houlihan, Colonel Dumbkopf, Inspector Willoughby, Smedley) also derived their roots from this same cultural kulturkampf of European immigrant polyglots that in today's "genteel" times are considered un-PC. (I should probabally mention that CRACKED once had their own take on MAD's verbiage, whereupon the CRACKED staff used their own last names as epithets and sound effects).

It's potrezebie, originally defined as a unit of measure equal to the thickness of Mad Magazine #25. The Onion managed to work the word, along with furshlugginer and almost all the other old Mad words, into a story back in June - the original article doesn't seem to be available online any more, but here's the Google cache of it. /geek

We didn't hear much of the Spanglish/Little Havana dialect of Sergio Aragones or Antonio Prohias, though. But then again their work was non-verbal.:)

Also, "fershlugginer" is probably a variant on "meshuggah" which I know from my yiddish-fluent mother-in-law is a colloquialism for "crazy" and also the name of a good Swedish Death Metal Band.

*late meerkat rising, swivelling round anxiously* Huh? What post-twice-in-a-day feature? Where? Oh and I'd gracefully concede to you every single time, Dan. I've been holding back on the flattery lately, so here goes: You're so clear, succint, pertinent (to me the most precious quality in a thread) and knowledgeable, it just makes me ~~sick~~ humble but wiser. It flatters me to be even considered a worthy opponent. Of course, what I say at home is that we both have our own areas of expertise. You do the teaching and thinking; I do the learning and drinking. :)
