wow, Fabulon7, those are the exact two i was going to put in. The last Tom Hanks movie I saw was "A League of Their Own" (and yes, that means I haven't seen Gump, Castaway, or Saving Prv. Ryan). Last Robin Williams was "Jack", not by choice. Some group thing.

Lou Diamond Philips (around here we call him the kiss of death)
Penelope Ann Miller (spectacularly bad actress)
Eric Stoltz (pretentious jackass)

And for some reason the SO has a dislike of Jeff Bridges, which I've never understood. Beau, I can understand.

Wow. Lotta vitriol on this thread.
Don't playa hate, playa participate!

I don't like Nicolas Cage, but I liked him in "Wild at Heart."

I don't like John Travolta, but I liked him in "Grease."

Tom Cruise is not my favorite guy, but he was great in "Magnolia."

Adam Sandler can be grating, but I still can't wait to see that new Paul Thomas Anderson movie with him.

People are shitting all over Dana Carvey, but we loved him on "Saturday Night Live."

Remember the good times, people.

I thought Brendan Fraser was good in "Gods and Monsters."

He is. He is also quite good in a film called The Passion of Darkly Noon, quite an odd film (also with the aforementioned Ashley Judd, but both are quite interesting to watch in this. Viggo Mortensen (aka Aragorn) also stars

Hoffman, Redford, DeNiro, Pacino, etc. Hate 'em all.

Hoffman has to be seen in Rain Man and Tootsie.
As for Redford, All The Presidents Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid have to be viewed.

I guess it's up to personal perference if you like those two or not.

But as for Pacino and DeNiro, arguably two of the finest actors of the latter half of 20th centry cinema - Pacino in Godfather, Godfather II, not to mention some of his other work, and DeNiro for Godfather II and Taxi Driver, as well as the Deerhunter...how you can find something to dislike about their work is amazing.

Just my humble opinion.

And my most hated actors are....Seann William Scott (aka Stifler in American Pie) and his "Dude Where's My Car" cohort Ashton Kuchner win it every time.

The fact that Carvey was good, sometimes Very good on SNL is all the more reason why he should be ashamed of himself in film. Same for Mike Meyers.
(thanks, crunchland, that's what I was attempting)
I'll see Paul Newman in anything. An amazing actor and (based on all accounts I've heard) a damn good guy.
JUst because you were good in one medium doesn't mean you're immunized from criticism in others.
Of course not, but taking whacks at "Master of Disguise" is like shooting fish in a barrell.

Also, it's silly to criticize movies and actors that you would not normally watch. Such as, I don't like Steven Segal, but he's welcome to make all the movies he can, because SOMEONE out there likes him.

I don't like the "American Pie" kids, but I normally don't watch those kinds of movies.

Hate hate hate:

Russel Crow and Angelina Jolie could disappear for all I care. Also dislike Tom Cruise, though I liked Rain Man and Vanilla Sky.

Will see anything with Edward Norton in it. Also will give a flick a chance if it has Johnny Depp or Ewen Mcgregor (minus the Star War flicks). Also partial to Cameron Diaz and Gweneth Paltrow when it comes to the ladies (based solely of "Being John Malcovich" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" and I know I spelled that wrong.)

Sometimes it's just so difficult to define an actor -- Take Sean Connery:

Bond, action hero : Superb

aging action hero : Pure class, good chemistry

Mid to post life crisis action hero: oily hair and wet acting don't mix...

sgt.serenity, nice this-and-that set-up, so...

must see:
Kenneth Branagh (yes, sometimes over the top, but dedicated to the details)
Sean Bean (pre- and post-Boromir; he knows the bad-guy roles are the juiciest)

must flee:
Danny DeVito (both nasty and mean, and about as subtle as a bed of nails folded up with the occupant inside)

Kevin Costner (one can never name him too often in this context -- one-note actor, and not even on key; special flip-off to him and his director in "Robin Hood" for letting the English accent fade over the course of the movie like early morning mist)

Julia Roberts (big eyes don't mean good acting)

...and everybody who thinks yelling = good acting. Have a throat lozenge and go to a job center, please.

Top Four Most Hated Actors By Mefi Members:

John Travolta
Julia Roberts
Tom Cruise
Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler? Anyway.

All are clocking in with 5 votes each. All others are blips on the radar screen of vitriol.

Oh and y2karl? I'm with you on Christopher Walken all the way man. He could be in "Police Academy 24" and I'd pay money to see it.

Jim Carrey.

I'm sorry, but 3rd rate Jerry Lewis impersonations do not a comic genius make.

Side note: People get kind of upset when you publicly dislike something popular. Some chick I used to work with asked me what I thought of Carrey and I told her homestly that I found him about as funny as the plague. From the reaction she gave me, you might have thought that I'd said that in my spare time I liked to strangle kittens or something.

People are awful protective of their celebs.

Definitely Mel Gibson. Gives me no pleasure to see a big homophobe playing romantic leads.

Adam Sandler is too easy a pick. Julia Roberts and John Travolta are just fine at times...but neither has any idea how to choose a script that's right for them. (Hint: roles that don't require you to take yourself seriously are good.)

Roger Ebert once remarked that at any given moment on cable TV somewhere there's a station playing a movie with either Gene Hackman or Michael Caine in it. Those guys are both great. Zulu absoutely ROCKS.

I am so glad to discover that I'm not the only one who hateshateshates Julia Roberts, and who believes that the woman is ugly. Her laugh absolutely makes my skin crawl, and 99 percent of the U.S. population is baffled by my response.

Gimme John C. Riley, Philip Seymour Hoffman ... almost every actor in Magnolia, basically.

These are on my avoid list- but not at all costs. Most of them have been in good movies, too...

Rosie Perez
Jennifer Tilly
Melanie Griffith
Dan Hedeya

I don't really have a "must-see" list. There are a lot of actors I really like, but everybody makes obvious stinkers from time to time.

Except Yahoo Serious- every frame with him is a comic gem.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I am absolutely horrified that only two other people listed Keanu Reeves. My hope is that it's because he is so bad that the subconscious mind registers him as "furniture" rather than "actor".

If were talking shear hatred vs. actors that have been entertaining on one or two occasions:

Kevin Costner (pompous bastard old fart - still trying to play badass parts and failing miserably)
Julia Roberts (is a superstar while talented actresses like Carrie-Anne Moss are ignored)
Parker Posey (always manages to get on my nerves)
Adam Sandler (making the same crap movie for almost a decade)
Russell Crowe (only been in one good movie and couldn't act in that one)
Andie McDowell (ironic that she's from the South but can't do a credible Southern accent)
Drew Barrymore (Yes Drew, I've seen your breasts many times. Enough already!)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Two words. Growing Pains. Some people think he can act. They are wrong.)
Keanu Reaves (Capable of two emotions. Duh? and NOOOOOOOOOO!)
Steven Dorff (the annoying little smartass brother that you can't beat up because you're related)
Meg Ryan (proof that you can base an entire movie career on crying)

John Goodman- I seriously hate this guy. (please do not bring up "but he was great in the Big Lebowski". I hate that movie too)
Robin Williams- Easy pick but that just shows my level of disgust.
Drew Barrymore- Believe it or not Drew, the whole world doesn't love your happy-go-lucky character you play in every role.
And the top (er, bottom) of my list- Vince Vaughn. Not a lot of movies under his belt, but he made my life unbearable for three two hour spans. Swingers- If he said "money" one more time I was going to throw my tv out the window. Made- worst movie ever "made" (lame pun). The Cell- I cannot believe anyone takes this guy seriously.

Speaking of one notes . . .

1. Mel Gibson
2. Nick Cage
3. John Travolta

All three should have stopped a long time ago.

And yeah, Robin Williams. Nothing with Robin Williams.
