When Sia gets tired of her mini-me dancer, she should hire this guy.

Nice, but he's no Christopher Walken...

And they say we're never going back to wearing dress clothes after the pandemic is over...

Ah, this brings back a memory. Went on a double date with my wife, best friend, and his girlfriend to a nice formal dining steakhouse. After dinner and a bottle of wine (or two), we had the brilliant idea to head down to the frat-friendly, jeans-and-tee-shirt piano bar.

We avoided detection for a surprising amount of time. We were off to the side of the stage, and the crowd thinned out a decent bit before we became an obvious target for the piano men. Once they saw us, though, it was on. They were going to have some fun with us.

After goading me to slightly loosen my tie, the piano men pulled my friend and I up on stage. Our responsibility was simple. They were going to play Salt n Pepa's Push It, and we were to cut loose as soon as the first verse ended. I'm told a woman walked over to my wife and asked if they should go up and help to save us. My wife emphatically said no.

What the piano men didn't know is the two boys in suits had spent four years of college dancing until the sun came up at raves. And they were teeing us up with a four-on-the-floor dance track.

The piano men play their verse. The refrain drops. We go _off_. It's so unexpected out of a pair of suited up guys that the remaining crowd loves it. Piano men are left saying "I have no idea what the hell just happened, but we've got dancing suits tonight!"

High fives from a pair of jaded piano men. We both get an unsolicited free drink out of the bartender from it. People asked us in the restroom if we were plants.

Never underestimate the dancing suit.

In related, Jimmy's buddy business-suit dancin' at the end of Never Can Say Goodbye...
(if we keep goin' it's infinite, there's Astaire, Cagney, etc, if zoot-suits count, it's even more infinite...)

That was really fun to watch! I love how it starts off low-key, just dancing-around-the-house kind of stuff, and then he gradually starts breaking out the big moves.

Cool!

It feels like there should be a genre of talented dancers dancing in non-traditional-dance outfits. Like Fik-shun in a full firefighter's uniform. Or something.

I love this more than I can explain.

I'm "old" now - I'm 38. And I have to find a way to find myself beautiful or I'll disappear forever. I felt this video so deeply. Thank you.

I felt this the same.

I know I'm way off, but I'm getting a Stephen Bishop vibe and I can't explain why.

I can see a whole Shall We Dance-style movie made based on this video.

He has the same lightness and dapper charm as Fred Astaire. Just like a breeze of joy. Thanks for posting!

My favourite example of this is still Since I Left You by the Avalanches.

This is excellent.

If you're reading this and haven't watched the full thing, it's well worth sticking with it.

I love the slow burn. He's just a fabulous dancer.
Apropos keeping going once your body stops cooperating, notice how discretely careful of his knees he is in some of those big moves. A lesson to us all.

Delightful! The choreography Reijiro Kaneko brings to his performance is perfectly timed; his flowing from casually dancing to impressive kicks and moves seems effortless.

I look forward to checking out more of Kirinji's music, too.

I can see a whole Shall We Dance-style movie made based on this video.

Thinking of the dad's dance in an empty auditorium, maybe that movie is Strictly Ballroom. Wish I could find the clip online.

Wish I could find the clip online.

Part of Doug's dancing is at the beginning and end of this clip. (I was also reminded of it - something about his hair and expression.)

I guess I miss wearing a suit, too.
That was a nice suit for dancing, but I also like bigger suits.

I think the powerful thing about it is not just that he's wearing a suit, but that he's dressed as a salaryman, with all the sociocultural connotations that carries.

I love way the video's title (Jikan ga nai) is written at 0:14. I wonder if fluent Japanese readers can read it easily. Is there a font that looks like that?
posted by xris at 12:37 PM on February 25, 2021

xris, it's readable but takes an extra second or two because it's so abstract or stylized. I got it but already knew what it was supposed to say beforehand. Someone else reading over my shoulder missed the "ga" because it's fused with the "kan"--so there may be a font like this but it would be hard to read long text in it.

I love this video, thanks for sharing it. It evokes a lot of the same emotions I feel when watching my other favorite video, even though in many ways they are opposites.

Oh, that first leap! So freeing!
I loved this, thank you.

I think some of you are going to like the adorable movie “Dance with me” (ダンスウィズミ) which I saw on a plane in the before times.

Probably more fun watching it without having seen any previews, but I can say this musical is a great take on a classic story.

One of the musical numbers from youtube.

my other favorite video
The hectic coolness of young people rhymes with flaunting old skills in the face of mortality perhaps. Both are edgy.
