I just don't know how these platforms retain users as they age -- e.g. my friend's kid is done with Roblox and now is into "vintage" Minecraft servers (like, 2009) Though Fortnite seems to do pretty well with older players. I can imagine Bookmetaface buying into the market like they did with Insta/Whatsapp, and daring the rest of the industry to outspend them.

Nevin slid on his Viz goggles and hapto gloves, then cracked his knuckles. The grungy walls of his tiny Amazon Primecube were suddenly replaced by the glittering neon latticework of the metaverse. He ignored the adaptive ads swarming aggressively around him, shouting his name, and headed straight for the swirling light of the nearest portal. Somewhere scattered throughout the endless iterative folds of the metaverse were the six remaining Zuckercoins. Whoever found them stood to win everythingā€”assuming the bots didnā€™t fry them first. So remember how back in the early '90s, Virtual Reality became this huge fad thing? Like, Wired Magazine and it's imitators were all about it, there were bad movies made about it, it showed up in all the media and stuff? And remember how most of the serious technical people dismissed it as a solution looking for a problem? And remember how they were right and the whole thing fizzled for a couple of decades and even now that it's gotten really cheap is still just at best a kind of niche gaming thing?

Well, Zuck was 8 then, so I guess he missed that.

In any case, evidence seems to suggest that he's never really learned the whole "a couple of hours in the library can save you burning down your entire multi-billion dollar social media empire on a disproven idea" lesson, so here's hoping he learns it the hard way this time.

So this thread inspired me to run a search for the word mark "Metafilter" on the USPTO's TESS search engine, from which I report the following mildly interesting findings:
  1. "METAFILTER" was registered as a trademark by Metafilter Network in 2014 (and previously from 2006 to 2012), but according to the USPTO, it was canceled on May 21, 2021.
  2. "METAFILTER" was previously also registered by Rayspan Corporation (2008-2015), apparently for something to do with wireless data transmission. From Google this doesn't seem to have been used much, if at all.
  3. Most interestingly, "METAFILTER" was registered as a US trademark in 1948 for fluid filters by Metafiltration Co., Ltd., of the UK (with a priority date of 1929). This mark was apparently renewed as recently as 1988.
Google Books gives me some fragments of ads for the original Metafilter from musty old trade journals, but sadly no full images.

Anyway... Metafilter: a useful form of clarifying filter which can be built up in units adapted to the size of the batch.

Ok...for real though...can someone please explain how his vision of the "Metaverse" is not just Second Life? Because I'm not going to sign up for that.

The VR goggles that will allow you to enter the Metaverse will be completely free, you will just have be required to experience fully immersive ads; occasionally at first, and becoming more frequent as time progresses.

Also, in the end user licensing agreement there's a clause where you agree to allow the semi-machine/semi-living goggles to grow connections from its processor through your eyes and ears and into your brain.

Another case of prior art:
Stephen Willats
Meta Filter (1973-1975)
Painted wood, perspex, computer, slide projector and problem book

The artwork was initiated in 1973 as a simulation of a state of society based on agreement. It investigates controversies around interpersonal relationships through collaborative work. The original interactive cabinet console provided two interfaces equipped with a monitor, a keyboard, a thesaurus of 1,000 descriptive words, and a copy of the Ā»Problem BookĀ«. The two participants received tasks to characterize the social and emotional dynamics depicted in the photographs on the screens. To fulfill the tasks they had to choose the matching words from the thesaurus and interchange their responses. Ā»Meta FilterĀ« led the participants through twelve problem areas within the field of interpersonal relationships. The purpose of the process was to reach a mutual understanding and possibly reach a state of agreement with the partner on the other side of the console.

Applying the principles of cybernetic homeostat, feedback, and the Concept Frame, Stephen Willats creates a simulation of social self-organization. The constant process of negotiation in search of a compromise constitutes the basis for stability in society.

I checked, both snowscan.com and snowcrash.com are both taken. Snowscan is technology for measuring snow at ski resorts, which is reasonable. Snowcrash.com is a digital organization that turns art and other digital properties created by makers and influencers into green nfts. In other words, it's a machine for bullshit. So there go my two commercial ideas, one for blocking unsafe stuff, like fox news (snowscan) and one for trying to crash or at least screw up the new metaverse (snowcrash). Because if Zuck is going to steal from an old cyberpunk book that I enjoyed in the 90s, we all should.

I'm very late to this party because that nor'easter that slammed southern New England earlier this week knocked out our electricity around 4 in the morning Wednesday, and it only came back on earlier tonight when I was at work. I've been skimming the thread on my phone (trying to conserve power and not logged in on my phone and can't remember password so could not comment, and for me engaging with this community means sitting at my desk, plugging away on my cranky desktop, I'm old) and I hope someone reads the posts down here.

There have been lots of comments and thoughts about the legal and financial twists and turns regarding this, and that got me thinking. I think we have a legit case to sue them, or demand a big cash payout to NOT sue them. I have three, maybe four, precedents for the case.

First, my favorite band Dinosaur Jr. started out as simple Dinosaur. Then these relics, who performed as The Dinosaurs, threatened to sue, and they changed the name to Dinosaur Jr.

Second, my brother in common law, who is a member here and can confirm the story, had a band in college called Vitamin C. One day they were contacted by a indy label from New York that had an up and coming performer who also used the stage name Vitamin C, and offered them a nice cash payout to stop being Vitamin C.

Third, I work for a place called The Barn, Bowl, and Bistro, a kick ass restaurant and bowling alley here on Martha's Vineyard. If some person were to try to open a similar place and decided to name it The Barn, Bowl, and Gastropub, my boss and the silent partners would sue the living fuck out of them.

There is also that Coca-Cola/Polar beverages dustup from 1994, where Polar moved swiftly to protect their polar bear logo when Coke started those Xmas ads with polar bears.

So, I often recommend people to check out Metafilter, and proudly tell people if they ask if I am on facebork that no, I'm on Metafilter. I do not want people to get the two confused. Also 1999 was a long time ago. So please cabal, please cortex, please mathowie, make these assholes pay one way or another. I've got feelers out to a few lawyers I know, and if I file a class action suit, I'll let everyone know, and invite them to join. This is some bullshit. Funny bullshit sure, but bullshit all the same. Time for itty bitty David to select the stones for his sling.

I would just like to point out: Supposedly we are for democracy and rule of law and all that. And we are dead set against dictators and oligarchs and such non-representative systems.

So
  • Libya = bad (GDP $25 billion)
  • Cuba = bad (GDP $100 billion)
  • Sudan = bad (GDP $26 billion)
  • Eritrea = bad (GDP $2 billion)
  • Turkmenistan = bad (GDP $45 billion)
  • Burundi = bad (GDP $3.2 billion)
  • North Korea = super-dooper-pooper bad (GDP $28 billion)
and so on . . .

You get where I'm coming from. "Meta" is run as more or less a dictatorship with Zuckerberg the dictator or AT BEST an oligarchy run by a small cadre of privileged, insular, and - most of all - extremely rich people. There are exactly 9 people on its Board of Directors.

Those 9 people are not exactly a representative sample of Facebook users or the countries across the world where Facebook wields massive influence or even Facebook employees.

They are representative of super-rich, super-insular America tech jackasses and that is about it.

On top of that, Facebook has "the most centralized decision-making structure I have ever encountered in a large company".

Why in the world do we tolerate this? Why is this even allowed under the law of a (supposedly) democratic country? Why are we not doing our utmost to topple it, just as we would any of the odious totalitarian and dictatorial regimes I listed above?

And oh yeah - In short, it's way, way bigger than most of the countries on our shit list and in many ways its evil influence is - though different in some ways from that of a dictator or totalitarian government - just as bad or even worse in its own way.

I'm just puzzled why anyone thinks is a good, or even marginally acceptable, governance model for anything remotely this large and influential. Why are we not dismantling this massive and vile entity as soon as possible?

There is literally no way any entity could be that large and that ill-governed and be an influence for anything but pure evil in the world.

Can anyone explain this to me? Anyone?

The thing about this that's amazing to me is that the Metaverse either doesn't exist yet (e.g.: if we're talking about Snow Crash, Ready Player One/Two, holodecks, etc..) or already exists but kinda sucks compared to the fictional ones (e.g.: Second Life, Fortnite, Club Penguin, etc...). To change not only the name of your company but also your stock ticker symbol based on what seems like not much more than a hope and a dream is wild to me. Like, to me this would be like Google changing their name and ticker symbol to something like "Plus" in order to let people know that they were serious about social networking and Google Plus but before they had even released Google Plus. Which, tbh, would have been hilarious.

I was fairly interested in Second Life during its heyday around 2006. I was studying and then teaching at an Master of Architecture program, and read various scholarly books and papers on it. We all thought it was the next big thing, maybe the future of architecture, the City, etc.
Then, all the universities, brands, etc., that had spent time and money to establish a presence in Second Life realized nobody was using it, and there were a series of articles on how Second Life had become a large virtual ghost town.
I think that the problem was that the 3d-online tech didn't really offer a new or enriched mode of interaction for social usage. Having your 'avatar' invite other avatars into your 3d, online 'house' isn't really a party. It's just chatting while looking at a 3d model.
So far, 3d environments are fun to play games in, but don't really add that much to just hanging out and chatting.
Until they figure out what 3d worlds can add to basic human socializing, the metaverse will continue to be a pipe dream.

If wearing Glass made you a glasshole, will wearing these make you a zuckface?

I think the reason that's not getting a lot of buzz is because it's not new - it came out earlier this year. It's a bit unfortunate that those glasses aren't ugly or distinctive enough for me to necessarily notice or judge people who wear them...

They also don't have an inbuilt display, which would make them a metaverse nonstarter. Covert audiovisual surveillance and audio comms is all that they do. So they'll move a lot of units to creepers, especially given that so many are going to end up torn off and stomped.

Then again, given Faceperve's attitude to surveillance I wouldn't be surprised to see "torn off and stomped" listed as a valid reason for replacement under warranty.

There were TV commercials for it earlier this year (summer, maybe), but they weren't Facebook commercials, they were by Ray Ban. Branding fig leaf.
