National Slacker Day...

National Slacker Day... Friday August 23rd. Kick back, relax, take the day off, do nothing... it's time to slack. Though I fear this only applies to UK metafilterians. The rest of you, hop to it! Work won't wait all day. It was slacker day back in February, too, and last year, and... *yawn... stretch*

Hey, I thought about laying out of work today, too. Is there some sort of Slacker-Group-Consciousness at work that we don't know about? Or am I just lazy?!

Not that sitting in an office chair, looking at MeFi all day is much more than slacking anyway.

Ah, but the crucial difference: The Japanese folks have many holidays, including, but not limited to, the New Year (celebrated for days on either side of January 1st) and the Golden Week, which includes several holidays and usually involves taking a whole week off from work.

Well I've lived and worked in Japan for the past two years. I know about those holidays and there are quite a few of them. Still, they pack in so many hours into the working day. In my previous company in Tokyo, many of my colleagues would do "tetsuya" which meant working the day, through the night, and through the next day. It was a common thing. I'm talking about a normal office job. I'd come in to the office in the morning and notice a few guys had the same ties and shirts on as yesterday and they had a zombie look about them. Still, those guys'll probably live to 90 years old somehow.
