A one-hour Dateline NBC report examines at the relationship between the U.S. and the Saudi royal family. Is the Arab nation we consider to be an ally actually doing us more harm than good in the fight against terrorism? Wow, you think?

Wow, you think?

Well, before this thread gets deleted, i think it's awfully funny how all the news stations have suddenly been doing a lot more anti-Saudi stories these past few weeks.

It's like some guys in some dark room started saying to the media: "Start doing some anti-Saudi stories, we want them to be bad guys now".

This links to a paragraph about an upcoming TV documentary. Was there a streaming video file you wanted to link to instead? I've blogged lots of web links about the US-Saudi relationship elsewhere. Is there some particular reason for promoting this particular commercial broadcast TV production instead of linking to web-based material?

Not sure what the point of this post is

Hmm.. come to think of it, I don't either. I don't remember what I was thinking when I posted it, just that it seemed terribly ironic or something, that it's being reported on MSNBC... I plead temporary insanity due to lack of sleep. Sorry, folks.

Well, let me throw in a twist. For the anti-Saudi types out there, I'd like to compare Saudi Arabia to the Vatican.
Each are the "religious capitals" of their respective religions; each have both secular and religious laws in place as an institutional part of their government; and each are the 'spokesmen' for the religion as a whole, even though both are divided into numerous sub-religions.
Their diplomatic and policy activities, with respect to the rest of the world, must transcend regular diplomacy.

Is this a reasonable comparison? And, if so, should this have any bearing on our relationship? If we attack Vatican City, are we really attacking all of Catholicism?

I think Mecca beheads more people than the Vatican, but ok...

I'd like to think that everyone can agree that it's a good thing that the Vatican doesn't have a military. Anyway, I don't think that the Vatican is a real country. It's more like a huge embassy.

I think you missed the point earlier, kablam, that this thread is doomed to deletion seeing as how it links to a synopsis for a TV show.

Answers: No. N/A. You lost me at "If we attack Vatican City".

I'd like to compare Saudi Arabia to the Vatican.

- 19 Italians / Swiss Guards didn't fly airliners in to buildings.
- You didn't see people in the Vatican City dancing in the streets after 9/11...
- Don't even try to compare the two.

Troll.

I don't know, I would much rather talk about why so many members have penis and penile secretion related names--anyone keeping a list? How many are there? What's up with that, anyway?

And, no, not that little thing--I mean, really?

God, I hope you're not including me in that company, y2karl. That's my real name.
