Relatable and funny! Still, while I think it's fine that posting standards have changed along with the community, IMO this is too thin even for 2022 metafilter. I'd love to see a post with more context about who the creator is, with links to a few more specific things they've made that you find interesting!

News to me. I didn't think anything was too thin for MetaFilter at this point.

If you want more context, Kylie Brakeman is part of a very loose collection of younger comedians that are the second generation of people to get real jobs mainly on the strength of their shitposting.

Some other worthwhile follows are Grace Kuhlensmidt, Meg Stalter, Carter Hambley, Blaire Erskine, and Caleb Hearon but there's a ton more out there.

A comedian having an animated conversation with herself by parroting Occupy Democrats style catchphrases. "Mitch McConnell is trying to steal democracy and Nancy Pelosi is NOT HAVING IT!" type stuff.

She was on a Maude Team at UCB on Sunset which is/was a pretty traditional path to getting discovered. I don't know her but looking at her resume it doesn't really stand out as just a YouTube star that got discovered. At least for the last 20+ years it was kind of a breeding ground for writers and comedians. It is pretty easy to buy your way in if you're so inclined, like with a lot of LA, but actually lasting is a different thing. I was under the impression they used rich-kids-paying-to-get-in to fund the rest. Which is how Ivy League works, just more transparent and very LA.

I made it about halfway through the video before I had to bail on it, largely because I really couldn’t clearly figure-out the message here. Was this a circular-firing-squad performance of a liberal satirizing liberal memes, or was this straight-up right-wing satire of liberal memes? It reads the same both ways.
posted by Thorzdad at 5:11 AM on April 4, 2022 [4 favorites]

It reads the same both ways.

Surely that demonstrates that the thing itself is absurd, ripe for satire.

I took it as a left-winger gently mocking what they see far too often from other left-wingers who are starved for actual political victories, and so develop an insatiable taste for rhetorical victories on Twitter. It's similar to my growing impatience with headlines like "Mehdi Hasan DESTROYS Ted Cruz in Blistering Monologue!!" that get passed around by jubilant liberals, while Ted Cruz goes on his merry way, absolutely undestroyed and filibustering legislation that would save thousands of lives and lift millions out of poverty because it'll cost corporations another quarter percent in income tax every year.

Can't remember who said it, but we're only allowed to win moral victories. The immoral brutes win the real ones.

I don't know that we still have a clear explanation of why this is 'funny'. I think the primary problem is that she starts with the comments, leaving out an example tweet. This is likely a conscious choice, but does lead to confusion.

I read it as a satire of the Liberal echo chamber. You will often see a Liberal post something like 'Nancy Pelosi OWNS Ted Cruz' with a link to a short video where Pelosi respectfully rebukes him. Then the gushing Liberal comments start pouring in. Something like:
"So THIS"
"God Yes"
"I feel this SO much
"Thread WON."
Etc, etc.

This is a satire from the left of a certain self-satisfied cocktail party style of political discourse common to professional class liberals (often people successful in media, often calling themselves "the resistance" during the trump years) who are comfortable enough to be almost completely divorced from material concerns and goals, so treat petty rhetorical victories as the ultimate goal of politics and approach the Democratic Party from a standpoint akin to fandom. A key part of this is that her character here is cheer-leading Nancy Pelosi, who is despised by the radical left for constantly working to put a damper on their agenda. Her character is also trying to put US politics into a simplistic Harry Potter inspired framework, also a common thing among this resistance type.

It may not be a style of rhetoric you've seen often, I suppose, but it's big on twitter, and I've certainly seen it here too. Given this video's timing, the creator was probably specifically thinking about the liberal response to Pelosi's "sarcastic" clapping for Trump during his state of the union, which she later said was not actually meant to be sarcastic.

What I think for me makes this not as funny as it could be is that, these videos loop when done, and I couldn't tell where it ended and where it started because of the litany of 'this' at the start.

I like, I laugh, I snort out coffee. So much this.
I can't remember when exactly I read a critique of The West Wing, but once I got the point-- that our "heroes" weren't really winning major political victories / substantive change, just clever speeches-- I started to see how much of it permeates a lot of Left discourse. So I agree with Ipsifendus, above, about moral victories, and the thirst for rhetoric. Also the thirst for parroting current/recent past drag slang phrases-- "Slay! Yass! ".

LOL, this is what made it extremely funny for me! Seeing how things can land differently for different people is one of the best things about the internet in general, and Metafilter in particular.

Phreesh and One Second Before Awakening have hit the nail on the head.

The lack of an actual tweet to which she is replying is intentional, because this applies to many tweets/the overall atmosphere of large parts of Liberal social-media.

I do not think young leftists see themselves at all in the same political camp as the people being made fun of in this video, and I do not really think the mockery is intended to be gentle.

I think blue checkmark liberal twitter has become kind of synecdoche for for everything that is frustrating and disappointing about the democratic party for leftists who have come into their political understanding in a much more polarized world than I did, and who would absolutely never identify as liberal.
posted by St. Sorryass at 12:58 AM on April 5, 2022 [7 favorites]

Fair enough. I'm old enough to recognize that for younger people and people outside the US the words "leftist" and "liberal" have diverged in meaning but I'm an old fart myself and In the US, and will use them interchangeably without consideration.

Even if the comedian behind the tweet is full blown Marxist, though, I stand by my interpretation. This is mocking the liberal celebration of rhetorical high scoring on social media while oligarchs capture more and more of the economy and the machinery of government.

In addition to interpretations above, I see this as mocking people whose engagement with politics is passionate but superficial. The left is a better target for such satire because it aims for the moral high ground in a way the right doesn’t.
