My flights are always so short that I'm never really served a meal. The one time I was, the "sandwich" was moldy. I try not to think about it. :) See also the previous discussion.

I'm in no mood to eat on a plane most of the time. When I do though, I get the vegitarian meal, so at least i'm guarenteed at least a veggie wrap or some hummus.

That very first thing on Delta? Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's all they serve anywhere in the good ol' U.S. of A. anymore.

[homer] Mmm, water. [/homer]

Typical -- the people who pay thousands for their flight get a gourmet meal, and the people who pay hundreds for their flight get slop that I wouldn't feed to my dog.

It's been said before, but the rule of the day when it comes to flying is ... bring your own food.

When I fly home to New Orleans, I always stop at the Come Back Inn in Kenner when I'm on the way out -- it's just outside the airport. I phone ahead, so my muffuletta sandwich is already made and waiting. Seeded round Italian loaf filled with ham, Genoa salami, mortadella, provolone and mozzarella, additionally stuffed with marinated olive and vegetable salad, and the bread soaked with the olive oil from the salad.

You should see the looks on people's faces when I unwrap that sucker in the plane. It's a mixture of admiration, longing, intense jealousy and a glint of murder.

Am I the only one who kind of enjoys airline food? Maybe there's just perverse joy to it.

Chuq: I did exactly the same thing a few years ago when I was taking Amtrak from south Florida across the U.S. to Los Angeles, and then up to Portland. During the layover in New Orleans, while walking around town, I went to the Napoleon House, got a muffuletta, and then unwrapped it and ate as the train headed west out of town.

"Bring [at least some of] your own food" is a good rule not only when flying.
