Columbus cops abandon local school's drag storytime to Proud Boy threats

The First UU Church of Columbus, Ohio organized a drag queen storytelling event at a local school. Days before the Club Q shooting, the Proud Boys violent hate group (previously: [1],[2],[3],[4],[5]) announced they would be "disrupting" the event. Despite announcements from local media and the city council that police would be monitoring the event, none of which reached organizers for comment, cops declined to guarantee any presence for the church event. A local LGBTQ community group offered to provide security, but without law enforcement willing to commit to the pretense of enforcing the law, the event could not be kept safe for children and had to be cancelled. The church speaks: "We're scared but we're strong, and we will not go away."

As of this posting, local reports are that the cops did eventually show up... to protect the Proud Boys.

sciatrix -- it looks like we were working on this simultaneously. I appreciate the additional links and context you provided. If the mods follow the usual process of keeping the first post on a topic, can you generously post the additional links in the other thread? I think your additional detail is helpful to the conversation.

How about disrupting the Proud Boys?

Yes! That's actually why I posted the link to this post in the other thread, so that they could be followed up with--the post stays existing if the mods delete it, it just doesn't get indexed on the front page anymore. So people will still be able to see the FPP when mods get to it.

I haven't clicked the links on your post, but I flagged this one for deletion because it's newer; what aspects would you like me to textually bring to the older thread, offhand?

And I hadn't heard about the Reddit piece either, fucking hell.

(basically: yes yes of course I will do that; how do we most effectively do that such that the two posts and discussion in yours remains streamlined.)

The wvxu.org link is helpful, and the "Previously on "the war on drag."

Can I say, your post title is better than mine. :)

I was one of the people who volunteered to help with support and safety. I am furious and heartbroken - and yeah, seeing the multiple Reddit posts systematically locked and deleted without comment is.... scary.

What gets to you more than the cops declining to protect the event (because cops are aligned with Proud Boys / white nationalists, we know this) is the many times the cops and city hall made their "we are monitoring the situation" announcements so their bias would be less apararent.

Druggings, Deaths and Robberies Put New York’s Gay Community on Edge

Tyler Burt, 27, was robbed of more than $25,000 after he was drugged at the Boiler Room in the East Village last December. A drug test came back positive for cocaine, which he had no memory of taking, and his doctor suggested he had been drugged with GHB.

At the police station, he said, the officers treated him skeptically.

“They asked me if I had been assaulted, and I was like, ‘Getting drugged is assault,’” he said. “It seemed like they thought being drugged wasn’t even a possibility. They said, ‘Maybe you were but that isn’t really relevant to the robbery.’”
