Even Yahoo's getting into the act of remembering last year with a reasonably classy homage on their site. Spot any other tributes on the major sites?

Spot any other tributes on the major sites? Why, yes. Don't visit if you hate intrusive pop-ups, but Casino on Net -- the world's largest casino, as I'm sure you all know -- is currently displaying a very tasteful "In Remembrance 9/11" pop-up ad on my screen that honors "the victims, heroes and families effected [er...] by the tragic events of 9/11/01." I think it's the curves on the cursive capital "I" that get me all teary.

Some sites are paying tribute. Examples: eBay.com eBay.co.uk CNN (I guess they have to) Notable exceptions include: Amazon and Google. That said, it's not September 11th in Callyforneuh yet which is where most of the dot com world seems to live. So.. we'll see. BTW, 'homage' seems an OK word. Dictionary says it means to respect or honor something publicly. That's basically what we're doing today.

I remember when the background of Yahoo! was always grey and we liked it that way because we didn't know any better. Slashdot replaced all their banners ads with a 9/11 banner. It links off to an overall OSDN page on 9/11

The Slashdot banner reminded me to do a revised version [self link] of the banner I put on my various sites last year. Feel free to use it if you want. I previously linked it to the Sept. 11 archive, but I changed it to the Yahoo! link after reading this thread. Cringeworthy is in the eye of the beholder, obviously. That's why I have no doubt we'll still battle the daily barrage of X-10 "spycam" pop-unders today, just like any other day.

What makes tuning off the color classy? personally I think most of the "tribute" out there is to avoid the tag of UNPATRIOTIC (gasp!). I for one will not partake in any of the sheep like flag waving.

It's fashionably contrary to look down one's hipper-than-thou nose at "sheep like flag waving". Choosing NOT do something simply because everyone else IS doing it is just another form of herd mentality. Don't sprain your ankle getting off the high horse.

Although mine is not a "major site," it features a tower that in its day (the late 18th century) was as famous as the Twin Towers. Inspired by Yahoo, I replaced the background color with 75% gray and added an animated gif of the American flag next to today's date. Its a modest but sincere tribute and my reminder that we remember.

What DWRoelands said. Besides, you'll see a lot (but not all) of these online offerings are symbols of simple remembrance or peace (ribbons, candles, black or gray) - not flags. And I don't think the distinction is coincidental. I, for one, am not filling myself with patriotism today ("Patriot's Day"? Eh.). There are too many other more fitting emotions to experience.

I enjoy the mnftiu.cc site a lot, but was actually thinking now might not be a good time for an update to the cartoon when i clicked on that site. for those who didn't click, it's not more cartoons, it's possibly the best memorial site i've seen. I am continually impressed by that person.
