She was a force to be reckoned with musically and I certainly don't want to minimize that or define her by her abuse, but her story of getting free of Ike and achieving success on her own terms was an inspiring example for many people of my generation.

So yes, she rocked. But she also showed us that overcoming a terrible situation, taking ownership of your own destiny, and forging your own path was not just possible but potentially transcendent.

If nobody ever played one of her songs ever again she'd still be worth remembering for the inspiration she provided to countless people.

I'm just so glad she got basically all the flowers before she died. She was so conflicted about her career in a lot of ways, and seeing her coming to peace with her legacy and being honored by her peers, as if she had peers!, was wonderful over the past couple of years.

She was one of the first celebrities I knew who was. She had such an incredible career, and she’s one of the few superstars who seems like she was inevitable. With those musical chops and that stage presence, it seems impossible she wouldn’t have been who she was.

There are few singers like her, who could take any song, make it hers and elevate it. Like, I don’t think anyone could take an already damn good Willie Nelson song, covered by Elvis and Al Green, and just take absolute ownership of it.

I saw her perform twice, the last time in Chicago in 2008. It was an electrifying concert, and it confirmed to me that I was in the presence of a unique firebrand of a talent. And who can forget the way she sauntered through "Goldeneye," only to erupt in blazing fury at the end? Yet for all the music, that voice, the presence, what I will remember most about Tina Turner is her infectious laugh--makes me smile just to think about it.

That and, oh, her classic line delivery: "Ain't we a pair, raggedy man?"

To me, one of the most amazing things about her was how effortlessly she exuded sexiness and beauty without seeming to care whether anyone else found her sexy or beautiful. She was gorgeous for generations without ever seeming like she worked at it or bothered wondering about the result. Tina Turner simply was, in a way that very few people ever manage.

I’ve just gone on a bit of a YouTube Tina Turner bender and, unexpectedly to me, the video that’s affected me the most is her live cover of a couple of late seventies AOR hits, fairly maudlin in the original, which she turns into real cries of the heart. This performance is from just after she’s divorced.

Harvard Business Review: Interview with Tina Turner (2021)
When you were touring, how did you prep to take the stage in front of millions of people? Did you have a preshow routine?

Yes, once I started my solo career, I would chant for an hour before each show, focusing on the true happiness of each person who came to see me. I visualized my audience and prayed that I could be whoever each person needed me to be that day so that I could inspire their dreams and help them recharge their souls. For me, being onstage was the best—a great exchange of energy with each person in the audience. Afterward, it often felt like a blur of color, light, joy, and visions of the many smiling faces who had come to see me.
What an amazing person!

I think I first saw her on some variety TV show or other in the '60s, when I was a little kid. She made SUCH an impact on me and I was a fan even in the years where she wasn't much in the public eye. Her "comeback" made me so happy, it was so wonderful to see the world finally really seeing and valuing her, and of course, after the movie came out and people hearing her story. Such a fucking icon.

I've been rewatching Miami Vice recently and it's always amazed me how well they made use of her songs on that show.

An exceptional talent and a noble soul. She fought hard and sang hard. In her interviews you can tell that she was a sensitive person and not hardened by the abuse she suffered earlier in her life. I found it interesting that she lived in Küsnacht Switzerland. It was also the home of CG Jung, Marie Louise von Franz, Barbara Hannah and Thomas Mann.

At the height of her fame and after the initial European leg of her Private Dancer tour, Tina and her entourage descended upon my home town to spend several weeks rehearsing the revised setlist for the North American dates. I'd left for grad school the year before, but friends told me it was not uncommon to see the musicians, road crew, and even the lady herself enjoying the city, and from all accounts they were classy gracious guests, and are still fondly remembered almost 40 years later. Their tenure ended with four sold-out concerts at the downtown hockey arena, probably the most dumpy dilapidated venue she would play during the year-long tour. Hard to believe that only two days later she'd be with Mick Jagger in front of almost 90,000 at the aforementioned Live Aid concert in Philly, then filling stadiums and arenas across the U.S. and Canada through the summer and autumn. Simply the best.
