A badminton rally

Malaysia's Thinaah Muralitharan and Pearly Tan played Rena Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto from Japan at the Malaysia Masters badminton tournament earlier this week. One particular rally resulted in much applause from the spectators.

I'm not kidding when I tell you that I was so caught up that I found myself leaning from side to side on many shots, as if that was going to somehow help the players. (As if the players needed any help.)

Halfway through I thought, ā€œIā€™m going to feel real bad for whoever misses.ā€ They were so gassed at the end.

Woah. I'm all emotional about this for some reason. They just poured everything into that point and it's only one of 63 (minimum, right?) that the eventual winners need to take the match!

Badminton is so weird. You can pretty much hit the birdie as hard as you want, and it isn't going to go out. Very different from most of the other racquet sports other than squash and racquetball. So many times watching this I thought the Malaysian back player was going to let it go, but nope, she just hammers it back. Amazing rally.

Those women battledored the fuck out of that shuttlecock.

They kept showing a slo-mo replay of the final shot, but there was this one really quick exchange of 5 somewhere in there that seemed impossibly fast and I wanted to see THAT as a highlight.

The physics of the shuttlecock is amazing. I've seen hacky-sack circles not achieve 4 minutes and that's theoretically them cooperating!

I watched this while in the bath, eating a nice platter of cheese and biscuits.

It did - briefly - inspire me to consider doing something sporty, but I made this MetaFilter post instead. Typing is exercise.

Love this

A favorite bit of sports trivia: a badminton birdieā€™s velocity has been measured at 217mph/349kph, setting the record for the fastest (non-ballistic) projectile in sports.

a badminton birdieā€™s velocity has been measured at 217mph/349kph

Which can become 30mph in, like, a second. Because physics.

As someone who took badminton pretty seriously in high school (I played competitively, but obviously not on this level), it's actually quite easy to hit the birdie out of play - these women are not just talented for hitting it hard, but hitting it with proper aim. (I mean yes, obviously it takes more oomph to hit it out then say, a racquetball).

Anyway, thanks for posting- this demonstrates that the hardest part of badminton is maintaining intense concentration while getting progressively ragged.

The announcer says, ā€œI think we mightā€™ve just beaten the longest rally recordā€ at 1 minute and 8 seconds into the rally.

The rally went on for two more minutes after he said that.

I just watched the fully highlights and its an amazing match. Relevant to the discussion here, Malaysia(in blue) wins match point when the Japan hits it just barely out of bounds.

It occurs to me that the makers of Elder Scrolls are going to grab this footage and design a boss battle around it somehow for their next game of endless cruelty.

That was genuinely extraordinary. When we talk about athleticism and sportsmanship and all that kind of thing, this is absolutely what we're talking about. The joy and disbelief and exhilaration on their faces was fantastic to see.

Fwiw if i understand the chatter in my local socmed+media correctly, not only did they smashed (heh) the fuck out of that rally, this was as they were trailing by 10 points in the 2nd set as well.

I watched this while in the bath, eating a nice platter of cheese and biscuits.

I think I'll have a 100Plus (kinda like our Pocari Sweat ie isotonic drink) in their honour.

I thought it was probable that someone would ultimately hit it into the net, significantly possible someone would hit it out, and unlikely that it would fall to the surface in bounds.

Their footwork was inspirational.

I had a childhood and adolescence playing badminton pennants and I am sending out a ā€˜oh so badminton is so easy *anyone* can play it at any level?ā€™ to my past life taunting peers.
