Like it was so hard to get porno off Napster before. Well, that was quick. Spanish pornography conglomerate Private Media Group, Inc. has made a bid to take control of the now-bankrupt file-trading pioneer, in effort to created an already-branded network exclusively for trading adult material. PMG claims to have the largest library of online adult content in the world, with of course the exception of the hard drives of most 16-year-old male Napster users, hence their desire to expand their collection. Honest.

A side note on usage: Why does "porno" seem wrong to me? In my usage, "porn" is the collective noun ("He was looking at porn while at work") and only a porn movie is a "porno" ("She was watching a porno in the conference room").

Thanks to the Internet, there's plenty of source material for perversion-related etymology. "Watching porno" also seems to be pretty standard usage.

On the one hand, unless something unforeseen happens to alternative (gnutella based) peer to peer filesharing apps/networks, I don't see a compelling reason to use "sexster", assuming it will be a fee based service?

On the other hand, this is sort of like a peer-to-peer replacement for the nonexistent .sex TLD. Sort of.

Yeah, but: Google returns 2,170 hits for "watching porno." It returns 6,940 for "watching porn." So both are in regular usage, it's just that there's some invisible divide. It'd be interesting to do a national survey, like the pop/soda/coke one, to see whether the divide is age, education, race, location, etc.

I assumed upon first reading that they would release low-bitrate clips of their product and allow users to trade it for free. If you find a scene/actress/movie that really turns your crank, you have the option to purchase a high-quality version from the company. They could even provide a choice between downloading a single scene or purchasing the movie on DVD.

If they're really serious about this, it could be cool to see how it would play out. If they can show that sampling=sales, it would show the RIAA what they could have had -- a centralized promotion/sales tool instead of a wild goose chase through the court system.
