Heh - I remember lo so many years ago as a student at UT in Austin noticing a funeral home on South Congress that had a large - and garish - purple neon sign. I couldn't decide then whether I thought it was the tackiest idea imaginable, or the coolest.

I'm scratching my head here, too. I suppose if you are going to be shuffling off the mortal coil, a nice hottie with your casket wouldn't hurt.

I've participated in hunderds of funerals and am pretty sure I would remember mourners like these. But like the good book says...Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.

It's kind of like a modern take on a theme that recurred in art for centuries - a living person with a skull (couldn't find any examples on a Google image search unfortunately). It was symbolic of mortality, carpe diem, all that. In a capitalistic society the equivalent is a bizarre sales pitch - spend money and have sex (or sexual thoughts in lieu of sex) while you're alive.

As orange swan remarks these could be considered, at a long stretch, to belong to the 'vanitas' tradition in art... although seeing them as contemporary illustrations of the 'death and the maiden' motif might be more apt.
