The dup checking on Metafilter is the exact analogue to the "first post!" on other sites.

I like this. I actaully made an effort to understand it & look thru the site & I just wish my written French was up to continuing the thread in it.

And there is definitely an undervalued strand of 'net literature - the results of a Babelfish translation.

The quiz [this is translated version] is cool.

So what purpose does this post serve other than to show that there are sites in languages other than English and that Babelfish can muck them up pretty badly?

It's like sitting in my dentist's office and reading a badly copyedited version of Highlights magazine. More here.

Zut alors! Le "website" et le "internet" (l'internet, n'est pas?) et les autres mots qui sont un probleme pour la langue Francais doivent être détruit! (The French government gets all pissy over all these new English terms creeping into the French language due to technology)

I like the stories about "Les pokèmons".

Salmonberry: oui, le (ou c'est 'la'? Je ne sais pas) Acadamie Francais n'aime pas les mots de technologie.

And yes, I haven't spoken any French in, oh, 2 years or so...I imagine I completely butchered it there. The only thing a high-school level of French is good for, methinks, is impressing those with NO knowledge of the language ;)

Oh yea, and for those folks with no French whatsoever--and to clarify my point for those with--I was just agreeing that the French Academy, the French institution in charge of the language itself, reeeeally doesn't like having to use our English technological terms :)
