I've heard that the Earth is a giant organism, and it will self-regulate, but this emphasized that idea with the distribution of heat and dynamic equilibrium. It's like Eastern philosophy with karma.

As for this particular article, when I read the first few paragraphs, I found myself thinking "this is written like a political speech. I'll bet this guy has an agenda". So I skipped to the end and, sure enough...

...If we just had a few more strategically placed modern instruments in the oceans for an extended time, we could understand so much more about how the oceans can cause abrupt climate changes. At present, there is no national plan for improving our understanding of the issue, and according to a 2002 National Research Council report, no policymaking body is addressing the many concerns raised by the potential for abrupt climate change.


So he wants more funding for the WHOI, coincidentally the organization that he's President of and the owners of the Web page this is published on. Yawn.
