I've never been a Willie Nelson fan, but in the last several years he's earned my grudging respect. Maybe it's because he's gotten older, and maybe it's because I've gotten older, or maybe it's both. Either way, if we both keep getting older, in a decade or so my respect may turn to acceptance and possibly even enjoyment. It'll be interesting to see.

It's easier if you think, "Willie sings with jazz intonation, and is impossibly drenched in blues and R&B. Maybe you can even call him an R&B/jazz singer?" The whole Willie thing starts to make perfect sense then. At least that did the trick for me. Of course, there's the pop influence too, but . . .

Oh, Wille! My old college's radio station runs these great Willie Nelson NORML PSAs. Also, everyone should go buy Red Headed Stranger right now.

I enjoyed this article, but why all of the soy milk references? Is Gopnik a vegan crusader?

Ditto for me, Mr. Crash. While I wa never a fan (in fact I particularly disliked his voice) in every new album release, I find one or two haunting ballads, such as "I Never Cared For You" (from Teatro)

Now that analogy of his...ugh, that's just gruesome. The image of one mouse creeping over another dead, mangled mouse to get the cheese...shudder.

Adam Gopnik interviewing Willie Nelson? What editor assigned that? Willie is an intelligent fellow, sure, but Gopnik is not known for his common man attitude.
