GODS OF MUSIC:There's terabytes of mp3s by independent bands available. GODS OF MUSIC helps separate the wheat from the chaff. If you think particular reviewers are in tune with your tastes then you can customize your quest for music based around them.

I originally found this site after griping on slashdot that while mp3.com had a huge amount of music there was no way to find new bands unless you knew people who'd recommend new bands to you. In my case this isn't terribly likely since most people I work with think listening to anything other than Billy Graham, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter is blasphemy.

If you're interested in emerging artists you should also check out Emergent Music which lets you create recommendations that others can rate and then we use some fancy statistics to separate the wheat from the chaff. (Shameless self promotion)

indeed it is. I really like this, even if the quantity of music that appeals to me (appears to be/is) low at first sight. I'm gonna dig through this some more.

BLATANT SELF-LINKS:
There are a plethora of good underground music review sites. For rockers & metal-heads, there are:
White Trash Devil (I work for 'em)
Rickety Old Shack (mine)

As far as other genres go, I'm fairly in the dark. I get my hands on obscure doom and stoner releases from Hellride Music, who happen to provide reviews and a very good online store.

Other suggested sites:
Stoner Rock.com
The Pimp Rock Palace (awful name, good indy rock / metal reviews)

Anyone familiar with P2P software and / or mIRC can easily track down the bands mentioned on the above-mentioned sites. Many of them have free downloadable MP3s as well.

This post was a very good link too. But, you can never have enough happenin' tunes. Be it grindcore, or simple folk tunes, good music is good music.

wow. i really didn't get this at first: i kept on typing in names of fairly well-known independent rock bands, etc, and seeing : "no reviews? what the?" -- only after i clicked on "most recent reviews" did i realize it's for (mostly) unreleased artists.

Yessssssssss....Dark Messiah....Wookie and his gang over at Pimp Rock Palace have been quite the soothsayers for a while now. They seem to discover good stuff at least six months before it becomes mainstream. I love those guys and that site. Plus they are willing to answer all the dumb e-mail questions you can throw at them, like "Who is Buckethead?", I mean really WHO IS HE? :)

And thanks for the link substrate ... we all need to stay thirsty for new music in hopes a Sex Pistol will rise up from the ashes and make us take notice. Just a reminder that another good way to undiscover fresh music is to browse the free downloads at Amazon. You can spend hours in there.

if you are into doom and stoner, (as far as stores) go to the all that's heavy shop or underdogma. ath almost always has a copy of something if they carry it, even if it is on the rare side.
going to stinking lizaveta tomorrow, i'm pumped.
i was planning my first post to the main page to be for stoner hands of doom festival, or if i were lazy about it, the emissions from the monolith. (i can usually barely afford to go to emftm, and it's in my own county, so there is no way i'm doing shod).

Very nice, Substrate, thanks for this. Their Dungeon page is pretty amusing ("Sorry, but these are the worst songs we've ever heard..."), too. With band names like "Dj Slut & Mc Monkeylicker" and the "Spaced Out Testicle Brothers", they sound like a bunch of Mefi members!
