Remember the misanthope thread?Here's an update to the story: the guy actually TALKED to my wife today. She was asking people at work how to get from her office to the Central Park Zoo. Her colleagues were arguing about it, but no one could agree on the correct route. Finally, with great exasperation, the guy said, "all you have to do is walk STRAIGHT UP THIS STREET! You'll get to the park, and the path will split in two. One way is for cars and the other is for not-cars."

"Not-cars???" said my wife.

The guy heaved a massive sigh. "PEOPLE," he said.

Finally, with exalted exasperation, the guy said, "Listen to my words! all thee hath to doth is walk STRAIGHT UP THIS STREET! Thee'll beget to the park, and the path shall split in two and twenty. One way is for cars and the other is for not-cars."

1. Re-read BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER.

2. What you have here is an amusing anecdote, especially in the context of the previous anecdotes. You could turn it into a short story. You could begin building a character off this man, and using that character as coloration in a bigger story about something else. I smell sit-com. Or screenplay. I see you moving to Hollywood. It's all right here, in this spark of real-life inspiration. Go for it. Live the dream.

Thanks for the "Bartleby" reference, Zeldman. I always loved that story, but I haven't thought about it in a few years. I no longer own a copy of it, but I found it online here.
