In the "not really funny" way?

This guy should learn to spell. Oops - is that his disability?

No, more like "Athrogryposis Multiplex Congentia, Epilepsy, Dyslexia, a Respiratory condition, and hard of hearing." Doesn't anybody do research anymore?

Not being able to speel can't be classified as a disability. His speeling problems are a basic human right protected by the US Constitution and perpetuated by public schools around the US.

Wow, those were terrible, as in really bad, not funny, and not making a whole lot of sense. Am I missing something here? Or is this guy just a really bad political satirist who's trying "to" hard?

Did anyone else explore the bizarreness that is this site? It seems to be a group opposing assisted suicide, on the basis that it unfairly singles out a group of people based on health status.

errrr..ahhhh.errrr,

Has any one ever been out in public and a friend tells a joke that is not funny but is meant to be used for its shock value and instead of haha its like "what the fuck". Thats like this.

I think he's trying very hard. See the post on doing research, "to" previous to your own.

Talk about irony...

Paul Cannaday's other work includes:

A Common Sense Guide To Handicap And Able-Bodied Relationships is a guide on how handicap people want to be treated by able-bodied people and how able-bodied want to be treated by handicap people.

Did anyone else see the "No Pity" sign among those comics?

The fact that he tried very hard doesn't make the cartoons funny, even if the point is valid...

Here's a hand, for those of you who don't feel like looking past the first page or so:

Paul Cannady drew these cartoons; from the site:

"Paul Cannaday has achievements in the disability movement are astonishing. He has advanced the disability movement by decades, without losing his caring of all people with disabilities.

Paul Cannaday is also a person with many disabilities. His disabilities are Athrogryposis Multiplex Congentia, Epilepsy, Dyslexia, a Respiratory condition, and hard of hearing.

Paul Cannaday's achievements go back twenty-three years. He finished his first book on disability issues in 1978. Since his first book he has authored seventy-four additional books. He has written plays and also poetry on disability issues."

Anthrogryposis, which is the only affliction i wasn't familar with, sounds like it would seriously impede one's able-bodiedness. It's quite possible that Paul Cannaday uses a wheelchair or other means of assistance, and i'm sure he's quite familar with the situations he illustrates in his comics.

anyhow, thanks for the link. i'm actually pretty interested in how people with a disability encounter the world, and this seems to give a decent view. and some of the cartoons *are* terribly funny, in, yes, a bad, even terrible way (the landmine "unarmed" pun?)

but, hey, i tend to laugh at inappropriate things.

Yo, "research" posters - I guess my attempt to match my level of commentary to that of the, um, "cartoons" didn't succeed. Not only are there spelling errors, there are entire words left out of the voice balloons. My question was rhetorical, in other words, does being disabled mean 1) the standard of what's funny should be lowered in your case (John Callahan, though I often disagree with his politics, is usually very funny), and/or 2) you're unable to check the words over once to be sure they say what you wanted to say? A cartoon is either funny or not. You shouldn't have to go look up someone's bio and then come back and say, "oh, OK, well, given that, then, this is funny."

actually, i don't think it did. reading the cartoons, as i mentioned, gave me an idea of issues important to the disabled with which i was not previously familar.

(and not funny? landmine? UNARMED? that's comedy gold, my friend, any way it's spelled.)

OK, I hadn't gone to the third page because I found the ones I'd seen so far so lackluster. "unarmed" is a good pun - don't know if it would have made me laugh if I hadn't already read it. But I did laugh at one of the other cartoons on the page - where Bush is standing in front of the flag speaking gibberish, and the "translation" says "Sumpreme Court." That's a great phrase if intentional - but if not, I think it qualifies as, to return to oissubke's original assessment, funny in the wrong way.

I think we've found the one and only person who actually sat at this page laughing out loud.

soyjoy: Sorry -- if I'd realized you knew about his disabilities and were just being snarky, I wouldn't have made the comment. I entirely agree with you that Callahan is much funnier.

Yeah, I like this one, too. Topical!

languagehat: next time I will be sure to use the <snark> tag.

Or maybe I should just put it in my user profile to save all that typing.
