Dang it. I missed frist prost because Mefi's stupid line breaking make that list take forever to get right. Oh, well, there are the links anyway. :-) posted by oissubke at 9:34 AM on October 24, 2002
It's too bad the Gough Islanders haven't figured out the difference between a forward and a backward slash - most of the page and all of the image links are broken on that site. Damn Windows! posted by Mars Saxman at 9:45 AM on October 24, 2002
oissubke: you might try composing your entire post in a text editor offline, then paste it in. posted by malphigian at 9:45 AM on October 24, 2002

That's what I've been doing, but Mefi took the line breaks in the bulleted list to be [BR]s, so I had to take them all out. The list was about three screenfuls on the first preview. :-) posted by oissubke at 9:50 AM on October 24, 2002
Grrr... none of the images are showing up. posted by silusGROK at 10:01 AM on October 24, 2002
Sorry about the image problems. I didn't realize right off that they had done the site in Word. If anyone can find some other nice images of Gough, please do post them. posted by oissubke at 10:09 AM on October 24, 2002
Here are (hopefully working) links to the images in the first "scenery" link: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
Wow, some of those are really gorgeous... Great post! posted by Johnny Assay at 10:28 AM on October 24, 2002
Someone once emailed a friend with a question about their blog software, and after looking at the blog, it turned out the person was sitting on a tiny island's weather research station, bored out of their minds. I couldn't even find the island on a map, or in google, and they had entries talking about eating puffins for fun. I never did figure out if it was real. I should dig up the old email. posted by mathowie at 11:11 AM on October 24, 2002

Its always been a dream to travel to all the World Heritage sites. Impossibly difficult but that's what dreams are. How does one travel to Gough? It reminds me of King Kong's island. posted by stbalbach at 12:03 PM on October 24, 2002
Great post, oissubke. By the way, in case anybody was wondering, "Gough" rhymes with "scoff." posted by languagehat at 12:26 PM on October 24, 2002

Great. For the past two years I've been mentally pronouncing it "Gow". posted by oissubke at 12:37 PM on October 24, 2002
it reminds me of Jules Verne's Mysterious Island....(i think that's the one--with the civil war and a balloon, etc)

[Derail]:
GHOTI = "fish"
In line with this week's critique of English pronunciation, dare I bring up George Bernard Shaw's plea for spelling reform with the word 'GHOTI"
GH as in "rough"
O as in "women"
TI as in "nation".
You mean de Nederlander!
