Are there any links on that site? I could have sworn that I saw a site a few months ago with about 15 ASCII color art pieces like this. They're amazing.

http://www.lhasa.nu/~klue/bio/ is found somewhere at the top of the alien's head, however the server seems to be down right now. It's a great piece of art

I'm wondering what the code is. I'm guessing it's a CGI script (with all the HTTP_REFERER stuff going on) in either C or Perl. There's lots of semi-colons and braces and a couple of ++'s. Does Perl use the increment operator?

Maybe EMCAScript.

oh! Lots of regexes. Gotta be Perl.

Yup, it's perl alright, though it's not complete, perl 5.005 barfs up on it.

that's too bad. I have a shirt from a programming contest at notre dame that has the notre dame symbol in c++ code.

It's been a while since I tried it, but typing it in didn't yield any results.

I love ascii/ansi art. A while back we were talking here about that. I used to spend hours and hours trying to get ANSI escape codes to just blink, or move, or display a nice menu for a bbs. Then "TheDraw" came out... that changed everything. I miss those days a lot, sometimes.

Speaking of which, I'm curious as to how many of you were on BBSes way back when?

Some of the old ANSI art that got passed around BBSes (uhh.. you can count me in on that old-time BBSer poll jbeaumont) was just phenominal.

That and the old-skool demos, written in assembly. 20k for a seriously excellent animation.

I want the program that reads the image file and the text file and generates the output, myself...

There are still a handfull of demo teams out there, they are just hard to find. But the programs aren't near as amazing, some are sloppy and large..

BBSes and the DemoScene? this will bring back demo memories. . .

there is still a GIF2ANS utility, you can find it on almost any shareware site... that does a fair job of things. From there you can pretty do anything with it. The color values are in there...

As for the demoscene... the original future crew archives are at: http://www.futurecrew.org/
