I'm a sucker for fractal art (and I don't even understand math!)--in addition to the insects, the rest of that fractal art contest site has some great stuff.
The interactive spider geometry was cool too.
I once saw art by a guy who smashed juicy bugs with a hammer making mosaics of their guts on cotton. That was pretty cool. (And, at the same time, really pretentious.) posted by Fabulon7 at 9:35 AM on November 7, 2002

That mygalomorph patterns site is the sweetest interactive math art I've seen on the web. I wish they had a way to slowly animate it through its range, so you could more easily see the patterns evolve. posted by gametone at 2:07 PM on November 7, 2002
What a cool post, Morphic - that first link is awesome. How bizarre that an artist would do this - train insects to turn into jewelry! Well I suppose it beats turning them into slaves and robots.
madamjuju: I begin to question those roach scientists motives when they say things like "They are not very nice insects...They are a little bit smelly, and there's something about the way they move their antennae. But they look nicer when you put a little circuit on their backs and remove their wings." posted by gravelshoes at 2:41 PM on November 7, 2002
gravelshoes: substitute "citizens" for "insects" in that quote and i believe you have defined bush domestic policy. posted by quonsar at 3:46 PM on November 7, 2002
The high-quality digital scans of moths, which can be enlarged 2700%, in the May National Geographic. (Not sure if it's art or not, but still pretty amazing.) posted by LeLiLo at 12:45 AM on November 9, 2002
