Kite photography and California go back a ways. "San Francisco in Ruins" was taken in 1906 by George Lawrence, who used a kite rig of his own design to capture an image of the city as it looked just after the earthquake.

The trees have points, the shadows have points, even the amusement park ride at Santa Cruz appears to have a point (even if it's only implied).
