how in the world did this article, which basically repremands readers from making assumptions about and being intrusive into the private lives of memoirists, end by propositioning dave eggers? i mean really, wtf? the author of the piece, lorri gottlieb, ought to be ashamed of herself.

I found Lorri Gottlieb's article interesting. I love accounts of people knowingly, yet unabashedly, sticking their foot in their mouths. But really, what the hell was up with that last paragraph? It was not only very poor writing form, but also very strange. It cheapened the rest of the article and essentially made it into a form of a personal ad.

okay, yeah duh. don't i feel stupid. here's the thing, my boss called me this morning and made me come in an hour & a half early so i was sitting here, half-asleep, reading salon & was thrown by the article. now that i'm awake it's pretty obvious to me. d'oh. plus, you know, big typo in the link paragraph too. sorry about that.

Reading her work, I'd venture to say that Lori Gottlieb wouldn't recognize "irony" if if propositioned her from the final paragraph of an article...

Infoplease definition of Irony: "a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated."

That last paragraph intentionally violates the whole premise of the essay. Sure looks like irony from my vantage point in North Florida.
