The Teddy bear turns 100

The Teddy bear turns 100 this weekend and is arguably one of the most popular toys of all time. They're cute, they're cuddly, and they're comforting. They've inspired songs and stories. They've even helped Hell's Angels show their softer side with annual toy runs.

And this is the town from which it sprung - or sort of near it, rather. Really, there is nothing more to Onward, Miss. than a little store with teddy bear crap in it. Muddy Waters was born not far from there, a few miles from Rolling Fork. So was the proprietor of nearby Bobo's Ceramics and Plaster, Wesley Bobo, who has been judged a mechanical genius and who just happens to be dyslexic (which is why no one recogized his genius, and he never made it to high school). I stopped by his business once, the one with the dinos in front. He had made a steam press from spare parts, and built three TVs for fun. He also designed a burglar thingie for a grocery store owned by Chinese-Americans. It looks exactly like a page from a Chinese calendar, whilst keeping the store safe at night.

I am not making any of this up.

Teddy bear aficionados might enjoy the timely birthday suit bear.
Cynics however may prefer this version.
