Good post. I have much less of a problem with the damaging of an easily replicatable piece of art (especially if it's Emin shite) than a Rembrandt.

I doubt they'll go for Tracy Emin again. I have much less of a problem with the damaging of an easily replicatable piece of art (especially if it's Emin shite) than a Rembrandt. On the contrary, as an artistic gesture, messing with something really highly-prized, carries much more weight. Even Rembrandts are too numerous and accessible. Give us a show. Squirt mayonnaise on a Vermeer. Poop on a Titian.

I don't think Emin's work is utter garbage, but one can safely say that her filthy bed or a polaroid of her own dookie will not be something which future generations will study as masterpieces of the twentieth century. But vandalizing, urinating upon, slashing with carpet knives, bopping with baseball bats or hammers property which is not one's own is intolerable. I may be junk, but peeing on it ain't gonna make it any better.

I'm glad you like that, Stan. Just don't tell me it's raining. It may be junk. Other kooks have done things such as taking a sledge hammer to Michelangelo's Pieta or attacking the Mona Lisa.

Poor Cathedra! In addition to be molested by "a frustrated artist who told authorities he 'didn't hate all art, just abstract art and realism'," it suffered the double indignity of having served merely as a target of convenience, as the critic's first choice was unavailable to receive his comments.
