Beats the lame ones you often find in say, The New Yorker. Courtesy of Capital Influx.

I subscribed to and read the New Yorker religiously for over six years and cancelled it two years ago in favor of the good, refreshing stuff I see on the internet. While the magazine does have some fine writing and cartoons, it is just not that vital anymore, just a golden cog in the machinery of hype and drivel.

This is indeed the kind of stuff I come to metafilter for, and it's a good post, but I have to say, I'd be more amused by a random New Yorker cartoon than I was by any of these... maybe I'm just old school.

Test that theory here, at the New Yorker's online cartoon database. Specifically, from the latest issue, this one cracked me up.

Wow, this guy is a master scribbler. I aspire to reach his level of controlled messiness. I didn't find the comics too funny, however. They kind of distracted from the crazy masses of lines.

What crunchland said.

McLeod's visuals are very cool (I would love to see the margins of his notes from high school), but as cartoons, they are more pessimistic than humorous. It seems that McLeod is successful (head writer for a children's cartoon), but I guess he has to retain a tough New York edge to remain an true artist.

I wonder what Hugh McLeod's caption would be for the New Yorker cartoon caption contest. It would have a f-bomb in it, no doubt.

i've been a subscriber to the new yorker for about 12 years now, and reading it since i was about 7 (well, just for the cartoons for the first few years, and back then i didn't really get too many of them) and i have to say that i've never seen a weaker batch of cartoons than appeared in the latest "cartoon issue" (2-3 weeks ago). bleh.

If you read his about page, part of why he chose to put this stuff on the website like this was to avoid "having the middlemen (publishers, galleries etc.) getting in the way".
