These are all the evils of genetic engineering come true. Such abomniation of nature must be stopped. I call upon all of you to reject these midget horses.

On a more serious note, I wonder if these animals are more robust than their larger cousins. My DVM girlfriend tells me that horses are really fragile animals that are (in her words) "made to die" because there are so many things that can go wrong with them. I think a lot of their problems have to do with their size, though, so these 'lil ones might be better off.

On a more general note: If you are interested in horses, you might find the International Museum of the Horse a good read too.

moonbiter: size is only really relevant to horse health when taking about those very much outside the "default size" (the size the vast majority of wild horses are) of about 14 hands (a hand is four inches). Health problems (aside from intestinal ones, horses really do have terribly-designed intestines) are often related to conformation (the way the horse is put together, more or less), it's basic physics: horses with short backs are better at weight-bearing than those with long backs, that sort of thing. Miniature horses actually have more health problems than normal horses (especially related to pregnancy and foaling), and the smaller they are, the more likely they are to have congenital abnormalities. Most pony breeds, however, do tend to be very robust (miniature horses aren't ponies). Go guide horses!
